Washer does not spin or agitate

Hi, My washer is an older model whirlpool. Model # LA9100XTN1. I washed some bathroom rugs that were brand new. The rugs seemed to shed alot of long fibers. I was able to gather 3 full handfulls of cotton fibers out of the washer. The rugs were still completely soaked. Since then I have tried to do wash and noticed that the machine is not agitating or spinning. I can only hear humming of the motor, although it does fill just fine. I have taken off the pump and the coupling looks to be fine???? PLEASE HELP!!

You need to remove the cabinet to expose the washer. once you do that you need to remove the 2 clips that hold the pump to the motor. then remove the 2 1/4 inch screws that hold the 2 clips onto the motor. ( remove the wireing connector first) remove the motor and Im sure you will find that the coupling need to be replaced. There are 3 parts to the coupling. 1 rubber and 2 white plastic parts. replace the coupling and install everything in reverst. your washer should work fine after this.

If this is a relatively newer Whirlpool model, it does not use a drive belt. Whirlpool model top loader washers generally use a motor coupling in place of a drive belt and are referred to as "direct-drive" washers. Since you mentioned the washer stopped working while you were washing a rug, you may have broken the motor coupling. The coupler is located between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission) and will wear out with age. Larger loads can put added stress on the coupler and can cause premature wear and tear. The following link explains how to access the motor coupling and replace it, if necessary:

The newer version motor couplers are more resilient and resist breaking better than the older ones. The part number is included with the instructions I provided. Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need. If you do not wish to order parts on line, use the part numbers I provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. The coupler is commonly sold as part of their in-store inventory. The average cost of a motor coupling is about $15.

If you have any questions, please post back with your MODEL NUMBER and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Small rug washing in front end loader washer

its problably not able to balenbace the load of rugs, if the machine cant balance itwont go to high speed spin. in actuallity your probalby better off bringing the rugs to the laundry mats, especially if the are rubber backed, the rubber backing will come off clogging your pump assy, then your looking at replacing hte pump for a few hundred dollars, for a clean set of $30 bath rugs.

Kenmore Energy Washer front load - about 5 - 7 years old

Hi mommo2,
I really hate those little rubber pieces that come off of those rugs, they really gum up everything. Just for future reference try to wash those outside with a water hose and a scrub brush. It will save you lots of money in repairs.
As for your current problem try to get as much out of the tub as possible. Then you will have to remove the small kickplate on the bottom of the washer. Get you some towels and a maybe a flat pan to catch some water. The panel will have a few screws around it that will need to be removed. Once you have removed the panel you will see your pump. The front of the pump has a filter that can be unscrewed and removed for cleaning. Unscrew the filter and get ready to catch some water. Maybe as much as a couple gallons. Once you have cleaned it out put the filter back in the pump and leave the panel off. Run the washer throught another cycle and clean the pump out again. You may need to repeat this several times. Hopefully this will solve the problem, if you still have draing issues you could have a clogged drain and for that you may need a plumber. Well good luck to you and I hope I helped.
