Most phone systems will not let you transfer to voice mail if you are on the extension that you want the voice mail to go to, which is the reason for the "Not Valid" message.

The logic is, if your talking to them on the phone, why would you want them to leave a message on your voice mail. Your talking to them directly already.

Does voice mail work when someone calls in direct from an outside line?

  • Mark Egan Jan 27, 2009

There is nothing in the manual about this functionality. The transfer button is intended to be used to transfer to another extension, just as you indicated you have done.

Unless you know that functionality to be an undocumented feature, I don't think you have it, or, if you are hooked to a PBX, that may be a function that the PBX can be programmed for.

A PBX is a central telephone control switch installed in an office environment to control all incoming and outgoing calls through a central controller.

CAN'T TRANFER CALLERS TO VOICE MAIL

A Panasonic system and Pana branded voice mail has a VM Transfer key that lets you send a caller to voice mail. It's programmed by picking a button down the left side of the keystrip (CO) and pressing PROG, the button, 94+ the VM extension, and STORE. (In a TA-824 system it would be either 107 or 115).

The TRANSFER button would work if the extension has CF set (All Call or Busy/NoAnswer), but there would be a delay. At the very least, when you tried yours, you were either dialing the VM extension which is probably not vailid because it won't let you transfer to yourself, or an invalid extension.

Need more rings

You have to change the rings from the voice mail server. If you don't know your way around the server, its best to get a local NEC tech although it is fairly simple to navigate. Depends on your skill. Typical default password for the server is NEC

Delete old voice mail - program new voice mail

You can usually access the system voice mail setup from any extension.

Press Speaker

Dial ext 200.

When asked for security code, dial *,2,# (dial it twice if there is no code).

When main greeting begins, dial 632.

Using the soft keys under the display, press MORE, then MGR, then CHBX or, follow voice prompts if non-display phone.

Follow voice prompts. Remember, 1=Yes, 2=No.
