propane heater uses a hot surface ignitor. this operates off 120 volts and glows red/orange when actuated. it stays lit throughout the heater on operation.  on the backplate of the combustion chamber is a high limit with two wires coming off it.  these two wires connect to the spade connectors on the flame detector cappillary.  Once you establish a fire, the flame detector generates a 750 millivolt signal which is applied to the pilot/main valve assembly.  My diagram will show this. 1fa8284.jpg

SOURCE: reddy heater won't start

The heater shuts off after 5 seconds because the photocell fails to see a correct flame, in your case any flame at all. That's the photocell's job.

What you are going to have to do is troubleshoot the unit to see if the problem is fuel related or electronics related.

Go to the ReddyParts.com website for troubleshooting tips. This is a good place to start.

SOURCE: Heater Burner ignites but main blower motor will not turn on.

it sound like the blower motor may be seizing up. try spining the blade by hand to see if it feels free or not. the motor could be trying to turn but can then tripping itself out on overload. (most motors have built in safety overloads which will trip during an overcurrant event. aka too many amps.) you may have to replace blower motor

SOURCE: 150,000 BTU propane Reddy Heater shuts off after ignition

Is there a frost line on your LP tank, if so you may need to replace the tank with a larger tank or refill your tank. This can happen if the tank your using is too low or too small (use 100 lb tank or greater). If there is no frost line it may be an issue with the thermocouple. The manufacturer offers a service manual and owner's manuals on there site. This should assist you... www.desatech.com Thank you

Reddy heater runs but not consintently shuts down and have to restart it. model 165DT

Shuts down in 5 seconds? If so, it is supposed to. If the flame is not perfect. Read on..

The ignitor (glowbar) only glows for 5-7 seconds- just long enough to create combustion. Once the flame starts- the flame must keep itself going. So if at anytime the flame goes out- it stays out- there is nothing to restart it.

What most people don't realize is that the photocell is looking for a flame with perfect color, which means the heater is not emitting pollutants. If the flame runs too rich or too lean (polluting) the photocell shuts the unit down. No self re-start.

Start troubleshooting by setting the pump pressure. Pump pressure is directly related to fuel delivery. Poor fuel delivery equal poor flame equals shutdown.

Heater used once 3 yrs ago. Now wont start.

When the heater hums is the fan turning. If it is I would add more Kerosene. There is no shut off but the Kerosene is sucked out a tube from the top of the tank. This tube does not reach quite all the way to the bottom of the tank. Your heater should hold about 9 gallons if it is empty. A couple of gallons would give it plenty to run though. Let me know.

When plugged in the heater makes a noise like it may be trying to start but shuts off after about 5 sec. Heater has not run in several years

If it were mine- and the heater has been inactive for several years, I'd check for a rat's nest inside. If clear, it's time for some serious troubleshooting. Remove the top cover. Is the fan turning?
