Wiring a L14-30 Power inlet box. Is it possible to wire this with a #10 wire with only white, black, and a ground?

The wire you have is designed to carry 220 volts. Assumming that your socket is a 220 socket and that is what your application is the following answer applies. The black wire goes to one of the straight prongs and the red wire goes to the other. The white wire goes to the tight angle prong and The ground wire goes to the ground screw. good luck

The white wire is used to power electronics inside timer:

Single pole switch has two insulated wires.
Remove both insulated wires from switch.

Timer black connects to one of the insulated switch wires, or to Hot wire from breaker
Timer red connects to the other insulated switch wire, or to Load wire going to fan, light, motor.
Timer white connects to Neutral wire from breaker box. Neutrals are white wires that are twisted together and pushed to back of box.
If box does not have Neutral wires, then connect timer white wire to bare ground wire.
Timer green connects to bare ground.

Turn power on, and check if timer is working. If timer is not working, then reverse timer black and timer red wires.
This wiring information has been tested and is accurate.
If timer does not function correctly with correct wiring, then move timer to another location to see if timer is defective, if timer does not work on specific Load, then noise or interference on line can be suspect. Also check ratings for timer and compare with Load ratings.

If you have countdown timer connected to whole house motor/fan, then horsepower rating is important consideration. If timer is rated 1/6 HP and whole house fan is 1/2 HP, then timer will not work.

First thing to consider is size of Load.
Leviton countdown-timer Load rating is 1800 Watt, 120Volt.
Look inside Jacuzzi at rating plate on motor.
Rating plate on motor should give Volts, Watts and Amps.
Formula Volts x Amps = Watts.
Sometimes motor shows VA which is Watts
Is Jacuzzi on 240Volt breaker or 120V breaker?
Leviton countdown timer is not for 240V load.

A) If 120Volt electric Load checks out, here's how to wire timer if 1 cable enter box.
Timer-black-wire connects to jacuzzi-black
Timer-white-wire connects to ground.
Timer-green connects to ground.
Timer-red connects to jacuzzi-blue.

B) Here's how to wire timer if 2 cables enter box.
120Volt cable coming from breaker box has black, white and bare copper wire.
Timer-black-wire connects to black-wire-from-breaker
Timer-white-wire connects to white-wire-from-breaker-box.
Timer-green and jacuzzi-ground connect to ground

Timer-red-wire connects to jacuzzi-black-wire.

Jacuzzi-blue-wire connects to white.
I am puzzled why this wire is blue if circuit is 120Volt.

Thanks for the beta, but I may not have been clear in how the wiring is set up. This all behind sheet rock with existing wire from a previous unit. So coming from the switch box there are two sets of wires...


You happened to catch the same guy who answered before.
You can re-post again and I'll step aside if that is your choice.

I see. The power is coming from a junction box into the fan-light combo
You have 2 cables dropping down to the two switches, and each cable has black-white-ground

The grounds are connected together and to the green screws.

Black Hot connects to both black wires that drop to single pole switches
White wires from switches connect to fan-blue and light-black wires
Fan-white and light-white connect to white neutral

Are you trying to wire a pool pump?
I found manuals at the Haywood site > I saw nothing for K48m2n11b or anything close to that number

But lets work on the problem and see if I can give you some help:

After opening a few manual and searching for the word 'volt' and 'pump' ... each manual talks about 'pumps' generically, as if the pump is a separate purchase item.

Lower down on the manual page they have a list of pool pumps. A search for the word 'volt' inside the pump manuals says 'match supply voltage to motor nameplate voltage.'

As you know, each electric device has a label showing voltage, wattage, etc. Your pump should show 120Volts or 240V. I didn't see any mention of 3 phase wiring, so I assume your Haywood pump runs on typical residential wiring? And that you are not using 440Volt or 3 phase.

The 120Volt pump will have a black, white and bare ground.
The 240Volt pump will probably have a black, white, red and bare ground
The 240Volt pump could have a black white and bare ground

First the 120V pump:
The 120Volt line from your breaker box will have a black Hot wire, white Neutral wire and bare ground >>> this wire connects color-to-color with pool pump

Next the 240V pump with black, white, red and bare ground
a) The 240Volt line from your breaker box can have the same 4 wires, in which case they connect color-to-color
b) The 240Volt line from your breaker box could have a black white and bare ground, in which case the black goes to black, the white goes to red, the bare coppers are connected, the white pump wire is capped off and not used. If pump does not operate with this wiring, another line from the breaker with wires that match pump might be necessary.

The 240V pump with black white and bare ground
a) The 240Volt line from breaker can have black, white, red and bare ground, in which case the black goes to black, the red goes to white, bare grounds are connected, the white wire is capped off
b) The 240Volt line from from breaker can have black white and bare ground, and this connects color-to-color to the pump

HOW do you know if line from breaker is 120V or 240V?
If you know which breaker wire is connected to, then it's easy
If you do not know which breaker
-turn off power
-separate wires so they can be tested
-use ordinary tester
-stand on dry boards
-tape tester leads to sticks so hands are away from power

-turn on power
-test each wire to bare copper
-tester lights up on Hot wire
-120V line will have 1 Hot wire
-240V line will have 2 Hot wires

Red from receiver to blue light feed. Black from receiver to black feed to fan. White common from receiver to ground.(bare copper)
Black from receiver (hot) live in, to black from household wiring switch. Common in from receiver to neutral (white ) from house (switch.)

your 2 hots phase wires RED and BLACK need to go to the L1 and L2 terminals,the white goes to the "N" neutral terminal and green or green w/yellow stripe is case safety ground---now at the breaker the RED/BLACK are connected under each one of two screws on the breaker the white goes to the NEUTRAL BUS BAR on the palel surface where all the white wires are already, also the green goes to the neutral bus bar,this only applies if this is the MAIN house power panel, is you wire it to a sub box panel then the neutral must be isolated from the sub panel chassis and ground can still be connected to panels case

Wiring a ceiling fan w/light


To add to red54's comments:

This is what I believe you have:

- one source in the ceiling box (black & white)

- one donwline circuit in ceiling box going to another wall/ceiling box (black&white)

- on switch wire in ceiling box coming from your wall switch (black & white) -- this is the white wire which will be hot when the switch is truned on

Here's how it should be connected:

- all 3 blacks in ceiling box connected together -- no other wires in this bundle

- white wire (which is hot when switched) coming from switch connects to the black/blackwhite fan wires

- connect all reamining white wires together in bundle

- connect all ground wires together

It's that simple. Trick is figuring out, of the three cables in the ceiling box, which is source, which is downline, which is switch.
Maybe red54's procedure can help you figure that out.

Curcuit wiring


Black will normaly go to the breaker on a 110 circuit white is ground and the bare is secoundary ground..You should see this with the cover removed. BE VERY CAREFULL AS THERE IS POWER INSIDE THE BOX AT ALL TIMES AND A WRONG MOVE COULD SEND YOU TO THE UNDERTAKER,EVEN IF YOU TURN OFF THE MAIN BREAKER THERE IS STILL POWER COMING INTO THE BOX THAT COULD KILL YOU...If i were you i might call a friend ta help.

Black=Negative ground
Yellow=Constant Power(Battery or fuse box W/ Constant power)
Grey=Right front+
Grey/Black=Right front-
Purple=Right rear+
Purple/Black=Right rear-
Green=Left rear+
Green/Black=Left rear-
White=Left front+
White/Black=Left front-
Blue=Amp turn on
Blue/White=Power antenna
