On a desktop it's easy to replace the sound card. Remove the power cord, open the case then purchase a PCI Sound card that will fit into one of the PCI Slots. You present sound card might be what is called an on board sound card (which is built into the motherboard). You won't touch the onboard sound card, you will simply add a pci sound card.
Well, the short answer to your question is "No, it won't work". The Dell Dimension 4600 does not have any PCI Express slots in it, therefore you can't install it, and therefore it won't work. But, if you installed a PCI sound card, it would work. The BIOS would recognize the add-on sound card, disable the onboard sound, and your sound will start going through the expansion card instead. Hope this helps.

Make sure you are installing the right drivers to your operating system. If this is an older sound card, goto the manufactures web page and download the updated drivers there.
the sound card is installed into the ISA slot not the PCI slot.
clear the cmos for a minute, set it normal again.
install the sound card to the ISA slot carefully - i mean a working sound card and couple the system unit and boot, surely you will have your sound card working.
