This is the guide to replace the cpu

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07139&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=228&product=362754

it appears there were two different motherboards used in that computer so you need to open the case and read the model number....

not all cpu's will work... you need the motherboard manual to see if the p4 cpu is compatable

Unplug PC, then re-attach. Power connectors are interchangeable as long as they fit. Many power supply's don't even mark them. Meaning you can use anyone. Including any spares for later expansion.

SOCKET 478 - you can check this by taking the fan off from the prosessor, the motherboard prosessor socket will have the number written on it.

Does it hurt to unplug my desktop every night?

It uses a tiny amount of electricity from the CMOS battery but really no problem at all. I turned them off for years w/o any problems.

Motherboard changover

It seem that everything is working except for the monitor or perhaps the on board video.

I would try a different monitor, if that does not resolve the issue. I would try installing a new video card. If you do try this, you will need to disable the on board video through the BIOS at start up.

I hope this helps,

Eric

You might need to update the graphics chipset for your motherboard. Go to the computer manufacturer's website and download the latest graphics driver and this will fix your problem.
