Question about Toshiba 36A40 36" TV

1 Answer

Screen shrinking My problem is the same as Julsf8's, who posted earlier in here. My screen first started shrinking from the bottom, then it started from the top. It will sometimes shrink down to just a bright white line in middle of screen. If you tap on the bottom of set, it will come back to full screen. Sometimes it stays right for days, other times as little as a few seconds. I absolutely love the television and would like to fix it if possible. Thanks for any information or help.

Re: screen shrinking

You have bad solder connections on the vertical output IC or on one or more of the surrounding components. Good Luck

Fault to the main power supply regulator [SMPS] section. Check and replace damaged component/s at its horizontal scan output section circuit. Check the LOT (Line Output Transformer) too for damage. Replace the horizontal scan output transistor. Check the input voltage to LOT. If the voltage is absent check the feeder resistor; if any. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. After a few minutes picture shrinks to single line on screen and then powers off

Since the set works initially, there are likely poor solder connections at the vertical IC. If this is not addressed soon, the IC will fail and need to be replaced. The vertical IC is a small flat IC with about 11 pins or so that may be marked LA7837 or something similar. Try resoldering the pins first. If that fails to resolve the problem, replace teh IC. Feel free to post the marking here so I can verify you have the correct one.

Most problems indicated by your description involved the Vertical IC. With your post "tap...pop back up" signifies a loose connection or to be more specific a cold solder. I suspect that no part(s) need top be replaced but would however require re-application of heat with the use of a soldering iron.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Initially I would suspect a problem in the Vertical section of the TV. This could either be the capacitor or the IC itself. In some instances, there are no component failures but rather cold solder joints.

Based on your post/description of :...Once in awhile picture returns to normal...", I am more inclined to think that it is a case of cold solder. which can easily be corrected by reapplying heat on the IC pins or the other associated/nearby components with the use of a soldering iron. Care must be exercised since TV units still pack high voltages even when off and unplug.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Bottom of picture is cut off

Usually when the vertical starts shrinking slowly, it is due to capicators getting out of tolerance in the vertical output section of the chassis. If it can be adjusted out through a service menu, you'll probably need a tech with the right equipment to perform it.
