Question about Alesis TapeLink USB Single Cassette Deck

1 Answer

Works great on most cassette tapes, but I have tried to convert a couple of older tapes, and the recording stops at 1:00 minute. Does this have anything to do with the automatic feature?

It would seem so. Normally you only find this on trial software, when they don't give you access to all the features.

check the top of the tape cassette if plastic removable tabs missing it will behave like a read only cassette if missing sticky tape can be used to cover the holes to make cassette recordable.

Yahama MT8X 8 track mixer cassette unit

I believe this unit employs an optical sensor to detect tape end.
Clean this off to. It looks like a transparent post positioned along the tape path. Reset the counter to zero and fast forward tape to end. Rewind, and try to play tape as normal

Tascam 488 mk II recording problems

Have you taken a look at the edge of the tape? tracks 1 and 2 on a cassette are usually next to the edge and you may have a bad batch of tapes that have the edge damaged. Another possible but not a likley problem might be the tape is out of spec. for the width, and your heads MAY have a little wear from use, and are trying to act like tape guides. If the tape is slightly wider than the grove worn in the head, the tape would be lifted at the edge and not make contact to the head. It is not electronic as you have diagnosed this with other tapes. Give it a try and see!

The VHS cleaning cassette possibly deposited fiber in the heads in the drum. You may need to open the cabin and examine the heads and the mechanism for foreign matterial.
