SOURCE: Replace a thermo coupler for a emberglow fireplace model bvfm18nl

Hi Josh. If you are going to do this yourself its not that hard, Whats going on, pilot wont stay lit. Allot of thermocouples are replaced when really all that is needed is to clean the pilot burner and orfice. If your pilot keeps going out, verify there is not some kind of a cut out switch that will drop the pilot out if it over heats or if its not venting properly.

Is benionite good for the haeth

According to Wikipedia -

Medical

Bentonite has been prescribed as a bulk laxative, and it is also used as a base for many dermatologic formulas. Granular bentonite is being studied for use in battlefield wound dressings.

Bentoquatam is a bentonate-based topical medication intended to act as a shield against exposure to urushiol, the oil found in plants such as poison ivy or poison oak.

Bentonite can also be used as a desiccant due to its adsorption properties. Bentonite desiccants have been successfully used to protect pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and diagnostic products from moisture degradation and extend shelf life. In fact, in the most common package environments, Bentonite Desiccants offer a higher adsorption capacity than silica gel desiccants. Bentonite complies with the FDA for contact with food and drugs.

Lights but turns off in about a minute

It might have a built in thermostat that will light the heater when room temp falls below a certain temp. It should then relight and warm things back up. As long as the pilot stays lit it should work just fine.

Flavel emberglow classic gas fire

No it should not. Soot usually indicates incomplete combustion and the air shutter may need to be adjusted. Intake and exhaust piping should also be checked for any obstructions.

I have a flavel emberglow gas fire the pilot light works but when you turn the fire on it stays on for about 5min then goes out including the pilot light

From what you described it sounds like the Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) may be partially clogged with dust, lint and/or pet hair. The ODS is a safety device, that shuts the system down if it detects that there's not enough oxygen for safe combustion. It can be cleaned with a can of compressed air with a straw nozzle (like you clean your computer with).

Remove the logs from the burner and carefully set them of to the side, out of the way. I should mention here, the logs have to go back in the exact same position and configuration that they were in, before you took them out. So, keep that in mind. Better yet, find your Owners Manual or take a picture of the setup, before you remove them.

Once you have the logs off the burner(s), use a vacuum that has a hose and brush attachment and vacuum the burner(s), the grate and any cobwebs you see in the firebox. After completing the vacuuming, look at the Pilot Assembly. Tank the can of compressed air with the straw nozzle attached and blow out the pilot tip with a quick blast of air. Now, log down the pilot from the tip. About 2/3rds of the way down, you will see a hole in the side of the pilot. That's the ODS sensor. Place the tip of the straw nozzle just barley into that hole and give it a quick blast of air. You may see debris come out the other side. Now, reinstall the logs on the burner, the exact way they were before you removed them. Light the pilot as you normally would and once it lights, hold the Control Knob in for 1 minute. Ease of the Control Knob and turn it to the ON position, Everything should not work as it was designed.

Take a moment to pat yourself on the back. You just completed what's known as "Annual Maintenance." Which should be done at least annually. Usually in the Fall, before you light the gas logs for the heating season.

Hope this helped to solve your problem.

After about 5 years with no problems, the emberglow vent free gas logs are not igniting. the gas is coming out as i can hear it, but the ignite switch doesn't have any effect. if i hold a lit lighter in...

Sounds like a bad pilot sensor called a Thermocouple. It is a copper tube that goes from the gas valve to the pilot assembly. It is the smaller of the two tubes. They are available at better hardware or farm stores. It is best to unscrew it from the gas valve and pilot assembly and bring it with you when you shop for one. It is something any mechanically inclined homeowner can replace.
