Why doesn't the filter work?

I would love to help you, but I too am having the same issue, although mines not even making any noise at all. At first I though I had a faulty filter, so bought another one, but that too is completely dead. I am all out of ideas, despite thoroughly following the instructions. I've bought a new 2 pin plug adaptor for it but that hasn't worked either.

Is it safe to use an exotic terra snake cave in an aquarium as a fish hide?

I think using a cave marketed for reptiles would be fine. Three things to consider:
  1. Was the cave previously used in a reptile habitat? When I use rocks from outside I usually boil them to kill any bacteria or microbes that may be harmful to the fish. If the cave is not plastic or wood, I would recommend doing the same.
  2. Is the cave painted? Some people are concerned about paint harming their fish. I assume most paint would be fine, but make sure it won't flake off in the water.
  3. Living Plants? I hate to state the obvious, but the plant will die and the fish may or may not have difficulty if they eat the plant.

All in all, I wouldn't worry too much about the cave. Just make sure it's clean and let your fish enjoy it!

What safety issues should I look for in aquarium heaters?

There are some safety precautions that you should take to make sure the heater is safe for use:
  • Since most heaters are made of glass, you should look for cracks. If there are visible cracks, throw the heater away because if water enters the heater it can cause electric shocks to the fish and even to the owner.
  • Make sure that the fish doesn't use the heater has a hiding space because it can get severely burned from the heater. Basically, just create safe hiding places with decorations for you fish so it doesn't have to hide behind the heater.
  • Never take a warm heater out of the water. Make sure you take it out after it has been unplugged for at least 30 minutes.

Do fish automatically sleep when the lights are off?

Like any other creature in the world fish need their sleep. When you turn the lights off the fish will start looking for a shelter for them and get some sleep. You can see that if you suddenly point a flashlight toward them the will start swimming in a dazed matter and look for a new hole to hide in.

Can I make my own aquarium decorations?

Making your own aquarium decor is a great DIY project. You can make ornaments for your aquarium outof virtually any substance. I like tomake mine out of Fimo clay or Styrofoam sheets. As long as you cover them with aquarium sealant, they will be safe foryour fish to swim around. You can buysealant at any local pet shop.

Theamount of time you should leave your aquarium light on depends on a number of factors. If you don't have plant life, I would saythat about ten hours a day is a safe average. However, not all fish take to light well so it depends on the type offish you have.

Our aquarium had a leak...so we had to strip all of the old silicon out and replace it with new. However I was unaware that some silicone can be harmful to fish. the ingriedients that were the the silicon...

The silicone most be 100% silicone appropriate for aquarium use. If the sealant tube did not say this on the tube it is not safe for use in aquariums. They sell this type at pet stores that sell fish. Also make sure you use acetone to clean surface before applying sealant.
