SOURCE: Programming manufacturing code

I tried to program the remote supplied with my Time Warner HD-DVR, only to discover that ... using the proper Yamaha code only allows you to turn the HTR-5740 off ... not ON!

I had to get the programmable version of the remote, and use its "learn" function to assign the "power on" function to an unused keystroke combination on the remote!

SOURCE: HTR-5740 Subwoofer Hooking Up Issue

You can use a hi-level to low-level adapter. Just remember, the Yamaha does not send power (wattage) to the sub, just signal. You need to use a subwoofer that has an amplifier either externally or built in.

SOURCE: Yamaha receiver model HTR-5840 will not switch

By fuse OK you do mean the one inside it? If so check the power switch, then check the power transformer.

SOURCE: I've had the same

Sounds like the unit is set to shutdown if it detects a short in the amplifier. The problem can be within the supply but it is most likely in the amp section of the unit. Transistors will go out over time and need to be replaced. Find a local repair shop and have them estimate the repair for you. the cost on something like this can be in the 70.00 range depending on shop rates in your area and the extent of the problem.

One possibility is dirt in the switch. Clean it with contact cleaner ... but unplug it first!

Since our downstairs circuit tripped due to an oven heating element fault, my Yamaha HTR-5740 won't turn on. The unit was not on at the time and the power supply is working fine.

it is possible that the standby power supply circuit has become defective in the receiver...this power supply supplies power to the remote control and microprocessor even when the unit is off...this is so it can pickup the remote signal when needed...this supply consists of a small transformer and associated regulation components...it may be possible that the power surge sent when the element overheated n kicked the breaker that the small transformer may have an open primary..or it may just be a fuse for this supply...you can remove the cover of the unit and look at the small glass fuses...you may have to remove them to see if they are defective...remember to only remove them one by one as you do not want to put them back in the wrong place...if it's not a fuse..then more likely the transformer has opened up...you will need to have the unit serviced by a qualified service person
