SOURCE: Honda 5500 Generator

If you have checked the stator, rotor and brushes and they appear alright then it is probably a voltage regulator. The honda dealer can run a test and confirm the problem at very little expense. It cost me 25 dollars Canadian to preform the test and it was well worth the money because you cannot return electrical parts and they can be very expensive. Have a great day!

SOURCE: black max 7kw generator high voltage output

Those voltage readings MAY be normal.

The AC waveform may cause your meter to read inaccurately. You would need to use a TRUE RMS meter to accurately read the voltage.

The siple meters actually read the AVERAGE voltage and then are calibrated to mulltiply it by the "form factor" for a sine wave. OFTEN these generators don't produce a clean sine wave. A square-ish wave will read higher on the garden variety meters.

Compare the brightness of a lamp comparing to when run on your utility.

The frequency depends on engine speed ... yours is running a bit fast...check it under at least half load and if off, adjust the govenor slightly.

Output voltage adjustment

Output voltage is based on 3600 rpm @ 60Hz. Sounds like your generator is over speeding slightly. Put a Frequency meter on the output of the generator and tune it to 61.5 Hz, that will get your generator in the 3600 RPM range.

Too much voltage

A) do you have the right generator, 120V or 120/240V model. Is it wired correctly. Has it ever worked correctly.

The voltage regulator is the main control board. It sounds like in correct wiring/model

Onan 7000 generator runs but does not produce electric to rv

First verify that the breaker for the outlets is not tripped and make sure that the generator is running at full operating speed. let it run for 5-10 minutes and check for output power. If there is nothing, there are two possible problems. One could be that the automatic voltage regulator is bad. The other is that the field needs to be flashed - a high possibility if the generator has not been run in a long time. There are many videos on the internet that show you how to solve both of these problems. Just do a search for No output from a portable power generator.

Coleman 7000 watt generator 98 volts

check that the speed is correct most run at 3000rpm failing that you will need to discover if it has an avr, automatic voltage regulator if not it will be regulated by a capacitor, remove it and have it tested

I have a Titan 7000 generator I just bought used. It needed a capacitor, so I bought one from Titan. It starts and runs ok but at an idle it barely put out enough power to light a light bulb. If I increase...

hi
ok this is how generators work principally when the engine starts it will just tick over ( 700/ 850 rpm. ) but once you plug in for electric power the generator engine automatically speed up . this is done by two item as the voltage regulator demands more power the governor
open up to increase speed engine .
solution check that the mechanical part of the governor is not sticking , check that air filter is not clogged up as this also stops the governor to function properly

I have a coleman vangard generator 7000 watt and it will not produce power any more, when it quit producing power it was running and then just up and stopped producing power but the motor was still running....

gen sets require a dc voltage to energize the field windings and there is a voltage regulator built in
That could be faulty
talk with your local genset repair shop to get ideas

My generator turns on but, supply's no power?

You must check:
  1. Are your breakers ON?
  2. Measure the voltage on generator terminals.
  3. If the voltage is less than 20 V AC, you should check the excitation field, rings and brushes, AVR - rectifier, cables and fuses.
  4. If every thing is OK you may need to recharge the DC field with a short connection of "+" and "-" of a 12 V battery to respective field terminals when the engine is running.
  5. If the AC voltage raises for a second and drops when you disconnect the battery - the excitation circuit is bad.
