If your lan card is faukty then you have to replace the LAN card. But as regards the USB ports not functioning the best thing to do is to install the usb drivers for your PC. When you install the USB port drivers for the PC the PC will be able to accept plug and play USB internet modems.
The drivers for your usb port can be located when you go to device manager select USB ports and it will take you to the drivers for the ports.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

Turn the router off.
Use an Ethernet cable to connect one computer to one of the 4 'LAN' ports on the computer.
Turn the router on.
Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD
Press ENTER
Enter IPCONFIG /RENEW
Press ENTER

Look for lines of output like:

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.40.150
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.40.1

Open Internet Explorer.
Enter: http://192.168.40.1 (if that's the IP-address on your computer for the 'Default Gateway').

You should see a D-LINK "login" web-page.
Try an ID of 'admin' and a 'blank" password.
Once logged-in, you can check the router-settings, and then "configure" it.

Driver

not sure why you will need USB drivers for your adsl2+ modem/ wireless router and 4 port LAN switch. It would help you had provided the model number.

The device uses a LAN ethernet port to connect to the computer. You will need atleast one computer to be on the LAN port for setting it up. Once setup is complete you can use wireless connection for every computer.

The user manual & drivers or the DSL-2740B which appears similar to your product description
http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/Download/download.aspx?product=DSL-2740B

Not sure if you need these. Your computers will need LAN or wireless drivers to connect to this DLINK modem/ router.

Good luck

If you connect the computer directly to the modem, does it work?
If that works then the modem is working.
Now connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
You will need to open the set up page of the router to check the settings of the router.
You can set up the router without the CD also.
It is very easy.

Connect the cable from the LAN port on the DSL modem to any of the 4- LAN ports on the Linksys Swicth (not the port Labelled Internet), then from any of the remaining 4 ports then connect your computer. Also try using a cross-over cable to modem from the DSL LAN port to the Linksys.

No connectivity

usually windows doesnt detect external modems except when they are connected through usb port which is plug and play. i guess after connecting the modem with lan port of pc try configuring the settings in windows and modem for internet connection to work. if the led of lan on modem is stable it means the modem is connected to pc well.

My usb ports on the back of my motherboard dont work

Check that the USB and LAN functions are enabled in the board's BIOS setting. If everything is set properly and they still don't work, you could have a bad motherboard. Check into the warranty if the board is new enough, or just use expansion cards to replace the lost functions.

Connecting a wireless router to Tiscalli broadband connection

  1. USB modem is connecting a PC USB port with a DSL phone line: CANNOT be connected to a ROUTER LAN (ethernet NOT USB port).
  2. Wireless ROUTER is NOT a modem and it CANNOT connect the Internet (or WAN) LAN port to any "phone line"
  3. Connect the Router Internet (WAN) port to Modem (you need a LAN MODEM = a modem with a LAN/ETHERNET port)
  4. Be sure your internet is running before strting ROUTER configuration with Router Company CD

Toshiba Cable Modem PCX1100u

OK. First of all you do not need a special or seperate driver for the Ethernet port. Its factory loaded with your OS.

All you need to do is plug the Ethernet cable into the LAN port on your HP Desktop and then into the LAN port (not the WAN port) of your cable modem.

The second thing is if its only a cable modem, then I suggest you proceed with caution as there is NO built-in firewall on a cable modem. Yes you will get on the net, but you are likely to be attacked with virus the moment you connect. I suggest you check very carefully whether the cable modem (if that's what it is) does/does not have a firewall as you would be very unwise connecting up like that.

Next, forget USB connection to the router/cable modem. That technolgy we've moved on from.. Your Vista shodul be 'plug n play' adn should configure the router for you. obviously that bit isn't so slick on yours.

Let me know how you get on..

Have you tried changing the lan settings, or better still use the disc that came with modem and it will auto install modem and configure settings.
