SOURCE: Garage door opener won't work
you should have installed a emergency key release !, it,s a cylinder that you put a key into and pull out a cable thats attached to your emergency release inside the garage , right now you would have been in already , but since you never installed one lets deal with the problem at hand , answer me this : do you have power inside the garage ,are you certain that the breaker is on ,did you have any recent power failures ?, because the circuit board on your machine could be fried from a close lightning stike , and i,ve seen it a thousand times , also your capacitor on your machine may be shot ! is your door wood or steel? if its wood drill out a 3 inch hole saw hole on the top panel either to the left or right of the center wooden cross member , now get a flashlight and look for a emergency relese rope , after you have located it,make yourself a coathanger with a hook at the end ,tug at the rope until your able to pull at the handle thats attached to the rope once you are able to release the door from the carriage assembly keep pressure on the handle and have someone else lift the door and when you want to fix the hole you made just simply glue the circle cutout back in place , good luck and do what i say to get in , please leave a nice rating if i was able to help you ,sincerely glenn

Yes the receiver can go bad over time and lose range. Most likely the receiver cost plus the labor will cost as much or more than a new unit...depending on who does the repair. FYI another cause of reduced remote range can be signal interference from other sources which would be a little harder to track down unfortunately. Wireless routers, new appliances anything with electronics are a possible source of trouble. If you or a neighbor bought any new gadgets there's a small possibility of thatbeing the issue. But based on the age of the unit that's my first guess.

Sounds like a skinned wire on your front or rear limit switches is touching metal. Go over your low voltage wiring and test again.

Yes RF units can go bad, especially older ones, the best thing to do would be to get a whole new opener. i say this because if one thing has gone bad that it is only a matter of time before another goes bad
