Question about Philips 51PP9910 51" Rear Projection HDTV

Protection Screen The Protection screen cracked, I ordered a new one but no one, including Philips can tell me how to replace it myself. The repair company wants $170.00! That's crazy! I would like to do it myself. Do you have instructions on how to replace this? Thank you, Hollyga

Re: Protection Screen

Pop the silver frame off the front. underneath there's a bracket at the top, bottom and sides. remove the old screen. the new screen is in three parts, the back screen the muddle screen and the front screen. make darn sure they're extremely clean and put them all together. there's a groove in the bottom bracket, screen goes into this. also there's the side brackets with an identical groove in them. putting the screen back on is a two person job. loosely fasten the bottom bracket and hold onto the screen. now fasten the side brackets one at a time and finally the top bracket. use the original screw holes. snap the outer frame back on.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. The power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

What you will need to do is convergence. You can get a repair kit from . It includes replacement parts, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from . It includes replacement coolant, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Need to replace a cracked screen, where can i find one or have one made?

If JVC does not have it you are likely out of luck, if the outer protective screen it might be possible to have a piece of plexiglass cut and put in but the original was anti glare coated so you would likely have a glare issue.
