Question about IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 Notebook

1 Answer

My keyboard on my thinkpad is acting like a keypad and I can't get it to type several regular keys like j, k, l, u, i, o, and m. Is there a way to change this option?

Sounds like your Num Lock button is on! That changes j, k, l, u, i, o, and m to numpad. You can just switch it off. with Nim Lock button top right on keyboard.

Sounds like the keyboard is in NUM LOCK mode

They keys map like this:

7 8 9 = 7 8 9
u i o = 4 5 6
j k l = 1 2 3
0 . = m .

Look for the NUM LOCK key on your keyboard.

Typically, you press the FN key (lower left corner) and the NUM LOCK key (typically towards the upper right) together to put the keyboard back into regular mode.

Some keyboard letters type the wrong letter

Did you check the numlock button ?

Laptops suffer from this button since it changes the keys 7890uiopjkl:m>? to correspond to the regular keypad on regular desktop's keyboard.
Turning the numlock off will bring the keyboard to it's regular state.

Another scenario may be if you have changed your keyboard's language at the windows control panel.

My keyboard asks like a number pad. How do i

Hit the Num Lk key and that should allow your keyboard to act normal.

If you have the Num Lk on then that means the letter keys that correspond with the numbers on a keypad will act like a keypad.

Make sure the Num Lk symbol is turned off by pressing the Num Lk key.

Keyboard problems

You have accidently switch on the Number Lock and turned these keys into a number keypad.
On some model laptops the NumLk can be toggled on and off by holding the Fn key and pressing one of the function that has a keypad symbol or labeled NumLk.
On other laptops such as ThinkPad it is the Shift key + the NumLk/ScsLk key.

You need to press the NUM Lock key.
The NUM lock key is usually the same key as the ScrLk key but to select the NUM lock you need to press and hold down the Shift key and then press the NumLk/ScrLk key. A LED light will light up to indicate the number keypad is on.

Cannot get backslash (\) character to display

To get a backslash, you need to print the upper ascii character 92 (decimal). On most machines you can get upper ascii characters by holding down the Alt key and typing the decimal value on the numeric keypad. On the little IBM machine I'm typing this on, there is no numeric keypad, but if I switch on numlock (by doing shift-scroll-lock) the j-k-l keys become 1-2-3 etc. Now id I hold down Alt and type 92 (i.e.keys 9-k), this is what I get: \ Howzzat?.
