My Dell Inspiron works perfectly fine on the dock. When I use it away from the dock, though, the power "comes and goes" and the screen flashes dim then bright repeatedly. Eventually I see that my battery is not charging. I have replaced the external power cord and that doesn't seem to help.

- Thanks. The problem is not with the dock. It never leaves my desk at work and the laptop works perfectly fine on the dock. It's when I use the "cord" power supply away from the dock. And it does the same thing no matter where I plug it in. However, you have posed an interesting issue. The dock DOES have a "grounded" plug, while the portable cable does not. Hmm
NEED MORE INFO.
I AM THINKING THIS MY BE A GROUNDING ISSUE, NOTHING YOU DID BUT DELL CONFIGURATION, TRY PLUGING THE DOCKING STATION SOME WHERE ELSE, DIFFERENT HOUSE OR BUILDING, IF SAME RESULTS
THE SYSTEM IS SETUP A GROUNDING THREW THE DOCKING STATION, WHEN YOU PLUG INTO ANOTHER OUTLET THE GROUNDING IS NOT SETUP PROPRLY IN THE ELECTRICAIL SYSTEM, THAT MAYBE A SAFTY ISSUE AND YOU MESS WITH IT AND YOU MAY NOT GET COVERED UNDER WARRENTY SERVICES IF YOU HAVE NO WARRENTY ISSUES THAN YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY SOMEONE TO HELP YOU SOLVE THIS ISSUE DOWN THE ROAD.
