try opening in a linux machine and you should have all the hard drive files still on there ready to be used and take them and then reformat you hard drive once you have moved your files to a safe place. and then format back to fat32(works on both mac and windows although limit is only 4gb single file sizes are allowed) or ntfs (only works for windows machines)and copy and paste files back onto the drive

As long as your computer has the following Windows XP will run:
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space
Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
If your computer has all of the above or better, Windows XP will run fine on your computer. It would be recommended that you install Windows XP as it is a more reliable version of Windows and a lot more functions and features are available.
Thank you for using FixYa! Have a nice day and please remember to rate this solution.
You are saying that you used zip drive in 1998.
i want to tell you that in 1998 the processors were of old versions.therefore, you need to install windows 95,only then you will be able to retrieve your data.
As the only reason to be found is that you used win 95 in 1998,now you are using win xp,the files you stored on your drive were only supported by win 95,hence you need to install win 95.
hope you get a well experience on www.fixya.com
Good day most often this happen when the hard disk or the DVD/CD rom attached complicate each other.Try this solution remove the cable attached to the hard disk and re insert it (be sure it is in shutdown mode). If you successfully enter the OS try to run checkdisk on your hardisk to check any damages or run diskmgmt.msc to managed your hard disk.To to it go to run->Type " diskmgmt.msc" without a colon then strike enter.
