What will be left on the hard drive if i format it.

Hi,

Basically nothing.

Whether you format it in FAT or NTFS or just zero fill it, it will wipe all the data from it.

Data can be recovered from a freshly formatted drive but it takes special software to recover it.

Regards.

My dell laptop was wiped and when i try to reinstall xp it only gets to 93 per cent in the copying files but it is the same disc we used a couple of days before to install anyone any ideas

Try another copy of XP, if that doesn't work then there could very well be Bad Sectors on the hard drive and it will have to be replaced.

I have an Inspiron 5100 that is running very slow. I want to format the hard drive (40 GB)and reinstall XP Home. I hit the F12 key while booting and the computer tries to boot from the CD drive but it does...

This would be a good time to upgrade to Windows XP Professional. I think your disk from Dell is bad because you are going about it the right way.

One suggestion is to put your windows cd in the cdrom drive. Browse the cd for a file called setup, click on that and setup should run from there.

Dell Latitude C610 doesn't recognize hard drive

when you took out the old hard drive
there is a black hard drive connector
this would have holes to push on to the new hard drive
without this, it will not plug into the motherboard
be careful if one of the pins breaks the hard drive wont work

We want to Downgrade the OP from VISTA to Windows

get the windows xp disc, press F2 to get into the bios and set the cd rom drive as the first bootable device.

Boot from the windows xp disc - wipe and re install xp as the operating system and then once installed update to at least SP2 and get the drivers for the network card if not already installed and it should be fine as long as you can get the relevant drivers.

Hard Drive Read Failure

No--I would say that the hard drive has gone bad on you.
The BIOS can see a hard drive, but it can't tell if it's any good.
If it's defective, well--you see what happens!

Insert the winxp disk and boot from that, when prompted hit any key to boot from cd.

Win xp will start to install choose to delete the partition, confirm delete.

then press enter to install to that unallocated partition, choose format to NTFS.

Follow the prompts and it has formated the hard drive and will install XP.

Clean XP Pro installed -- now NIC disappeared!

Well once you did a clean install over all of Dell drivers etc etc. You wiped out the restore artion that was on the computer. You have to go to Dells website and under the support tab look for the Nic card that you have inside the computer.
