Re: sumsung hps5053 would not turn on
I fixed this model of TV. Symptom was NO POWER. Totally dead. Not even a blue LED up front. Here's what I had to do...
I found a blown thermistor on the power supply board. It's green and located near the 120vac mains input to the board. There is a component number written on the board near it (as with all components) and it begins with "TH" i believe. So it will be something like "TH101". It was very easy to identify that this part had gone bad on my power supply, as i was literally blown apart and debris had been scattered all about the area.
Before finding this faulty component, I had done some preliminary voltage testing from the power supply's outputs. I started with the 5 volt stand by signal feeding into the logic controller board. It was bouncing around from 1v-3v.
After replacing the faulty thermistor, there was a steady 5v signal on the standby circuit. However, the blue power button was still not illuminating. And there was absolutely no voltage going into the power button board (which is fed from the logic controller). So after attempting to replace a few dozen suspect high ESR SMD caps on the logic board (to no avail), I ordered a new one.
And then the TV came to life.
Works great now!

I had this exact problem on my TV, everything said it was the power board. It wasnt, luckily i was able to return that board. It was the YSUS board.
I should have done this this first but this is how i verified the old power board was good. Unplug TV, take the cover off and disconnect the wire harness going to the YSUS, plug TV in and turn on. If led stay blue its the YSUS.
Hi A common problem for these is bad capacitors in the power supply, Remove the back from your Tv and look at the power supply on the left hand side.
You will see roughly around 9 x capacitors that are bulged / domed shaped on top usually these are valued at 3300uf 10V any that have bulged or leaked a brown like substance should be changed. This will cure the problem as they overheat being sat next to a heatsink that gets very hot! Try and change them for the same 3300uf but a higher voltage. Hope this helps
welcome to fixya!
without doing voltage checks, my best guess is this:
Plasma hpr5053 or hps5053 models will burn out a buffer board or both, there are two buffers and the Y board.
I usually change all 3 at once, but if on a budget you can try to remove one buffer and see if you get half picture (upper or lower)
this is something only a technician should attempt. the boards cost $200 each (buffers)
$300-$400 (Y board).
if you actually get half a picture the Y and one buffer are good, a bad buffer usually burns out the Y board. and in really bad cases the panel is bad also (not common, but possible)
For part#s , specific help you can post a model# , but again this is a repairmans job not something the average customer can fix.
hope this helps
Since the set is less than 1 year old, it should still be under warranty. Request warranty service.
The noise you are hearing is probably arcing inside the set on the power supply board. Continuing to attempt to turn on the set will only make things worse. Please request warranty service as this is unusual for a TV that new.
did you make sure tv was on the right channel or on the right line (1, 2, or3,) channel? if ao, how old is the ps3? try wiggling the cable in the back of the ps3. it might get the signal to come through. if it that works then the prot on the ps3 is bad. find out if it is still on warantty.
I may have the fix.... Fixed two of my 50 inch plasmas that stopped turning on 1 year after I bought them. They both wouldn't turn on.... LOL Just gave me the black screen of death and a red blinking LED when I tried to turn on. I have pics and step by step instructions. Your time and under 40 bucks is what you'll need. I fixed both my sets for 80 cents. You can fix yours too.... I too got the it would be better to replace it than to have it fixed lie told to me too. I held out to the bitter end. Glad I did....
