Question about Nespresso C100B Essenza Single-Serve Automatic Espresso Machine, Black

1 Answer

Doesn't heat the water

After 50 cups or so, my machine does not warm the water anymore. The water goes through the capsule cold, so the coffee is very very weak.

I have the same problem. Even worse, the lights are blinking indefinitely. I have to power off and on the machine, but sometimes it's still blinking. And when finally it starts working the coffee is cold. Please help!

Basing on personal experience (you can find more on Google probably), solutions are:

On percolated (filter) coffee machines:

Check water temp, if water temp is insufficient , most common is scale heating element , faulty element, faulty thermostat.
Check if water is dripping right at the center of the filter, if it is dripping on one side because the orifice is clogged, that can result in weak coffee.
Coffee blend not well distributed on filter basket.

On Espresso machines:

Check water temp, same as filter coffee machines (thermostat element, scale on heating chamber).
Ensure that coffee is filled correctly in the filter cup (fill at level), and well pressed.
Ensure that the coffee mixture that you are using is not too coarse, buy the apposite one for espresso.
Ensure that you are not leaving the machine brewing for a time that is too long, and Italian coffee cup is very small, approximately one regular shot.

On the hob moka pots (espresso, Moka and Bialetti type):

This are the trickiest ones, you need art and practice to get a good espresso with a Moka, but when you learn, the result is better than what you may get with an home electrical espresso maker.
The frame on the hob must be not too strong, and the mixture coarse but well pressed, with water at level tag, or you will get a weak coffee.
On Mokas a good strategy is keeping hob at minimum, and turning up the flame at top when coffee starts coming out.

French and turkish cafetieres:

Ensure that you put enough coffee, water hot enough, and that you left the infusion enough time to get a strong coffee.

Note: insufficient pressure and clogged lines on electric machines never give you a weak coffee, exactly the opposite.
Not pressed mixture always gives weak coffee, but too much pressed mixture may give you coffee with bad taste.

I bought my senseo philips HD7825. I loaded the water then plugged it in then I added the coffee pod. However, the power light kept blinking (slowly) as though it is heating up. But it is not heating.

Quite possible the boiler has failed. You would need to disassemble to check (with a multimeter) if the boiler heater elements are a continuous track from one terminal to the other. Boilers often fail - else you have a electronics problem somewhere that will require a tech person check out.
The other thing boilers can do is to develop an earth leak between the heater element itself and the outside of the element - this will cause the machine to shut down your house's power supply if you have an Earth Leakage Safety Switch installed in your meter box.

Given this was an inexpensive machine and uses rather "odd bod" pods it may be time to consider something more 'common' like a Nespresso, Aldi or the Cafitaly style of capsules.

I especially like the Cafitaly capsules as they have more coffee than Nespresso, have 2 internal filters, can be refilled with ground coffee (I reseal top with wide cellotape) and can be refilled at least 4-6 times before they should be thrown away. Instead of around 30-50c a cup, refilled capsules costs me about 9c a cup - I get about 100 capsules out of 1Kg (2.2 pounds) of coffee.... beat that.

When I turn my keurig on(power button) the cold water immediately goes through the system into the cup. we have cleaned the unit but no change. Before this it was working perfectly

It could be the heating element inside the machine. Or I could be the water pump. The water pump pushes the water into a chamber where it is heated up before it goes into the cup. If there is a manual near by, read the part under water pump.

My Nespresso Xn250140 U doesn't work. Why?

Check the hole where you put the capsule, are there any faults or obstructions visible? If not be very suspicious of your capsules, there are lots of brands of Nespresso coffeemakers and the capsules have slight variations between the different brands. The variations are almost invisible but enough to prevent the wrong capsules being used.

When i put in the nespresso cup in the Citiz and close it nothing happens. Ussually it should make holes in the cup so the coffee can come out. But there are no holes when i open it again. So i can not...

-the short term solution-
1. take your affected capsule. set it on its un-punctured/un-perforated bottom (the thin foil surface) on a flat surface. the three puncture holes should be facing upward on the top of the capsule. by the way, if you shake the capsule you should hear the grounds sound dry as if the capsule was new.

2. find a thin small rubber band. size-wise, ideally, the rubber band will fit loosely around your thumb; with a very small gap between the rubber and your thumb.

3. put the rubber band around the collar of the capsule. the band should be put over the top of the capsule and pushed down until it stops flush against the flange (rim). if the band is correctly placed, the band will be just 1mm flat inside the rolled bare aluminum edge (rim).

4. insert the capsule in your citiz machine as usual. optional: you can orient one of the puncture holes at 12 o'clock position (top dead center) during the insertion process. this time, it will work. you will find the capsule will eject cleanly with the rubber band intact.

5. save the rubber band.

-which machines does this apply to?-
this is a common problem with nespresso machines introduced after 2010, specifically the citiz. i have not seen this problem on the pixie, yet. i would expect this issue on the lattissima plus.
i am assuming that the machine is otherwise functioning properly: meaning that the machine does not have an issue with the water pump, excessive scaling deposits restricting water flow, or some other major mechanical part.
-why is this happening?-
look at the capsule, the post-2010 machines bite new slightly rectangular indentations on the capsule around the top edge of the wall. this is new. nepresso changed the insertion mechanism in response to competitors bringing non-nespresso branded capsules to market: Douwe Egberts/Sara Lee "L'or expressO", Caffe Vergnana "ESPRESSO", etc.
this new insertion mechanism was supposed to thwart knockoff capsules, instead it is unintentionally thwarting your "real" nespresso capsule. the injector needles are not piercing correctly all the way. the injectors poorly lodge: deep enough to make puncture holes but not deep enough to allow water to flow freely into the espresso grounds compartment.
two things can happen:
1. the pressure release valve, inside the brewing chamber which prevents an explosion occurring if the coffee exhaust path becomes blocked, is activated and hot water overflows into your used capsule basket.
2. the hot water flows outside and around the capsule and into your cup as clear hot water.
-what do i do long term?-
contact nepresso. get your machine repaired or replaced. this is a factory manufacturing defect that has nothing to do with you, wear, use, or hard water. refuse to pay the $125 repair fee. demand that they fix the machine free of charge. they will send you a loaner in a plastic shipping crate to use while your is being fixed. you should not have to suffer without espresso or waste legitimately purchased capsules just because nespresso is in a legal fight capsule copycats. this is not your fault.

We were using tap water to fill the machine for about 2, nothing comes out at you think it has something to do with hard water?

Probably, unless the heating element has burned out. All coffee makers suffer from the same problem. Use a 50/50 solution of cold water and white vinegar--run it through several times, then run just cold water through until the vinegar taste is gone. Good luck!
