My Iphone wont turn on

ive tried charging and holding both buttons but nothing that means it is a hardware problem or the motherboard

I tried this and it worked:

try resetting it by pressing and hold the Sleep/Wake button (on the top right of the unit) and the Home button (circular button on the iPhone?s face) simultaneously for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Hold down the home button then plug the usb lead into the back of the computer at the same time. see if that helps!

The first tip worked for me too, just try resetting it... Here's the logic: When your iPhone dies, the internal RAM shuts down after the reserve battery power is used. This in turn sleeps the motherboard, which is why it appears dead. Resetting the RAM on the motherboard will juice the very small amount of energy out of the battery to re-boot the motherboard. If resetting your iPhone doesn't work for you at first. Lay it in your cradle for approx. 10 minutes then try resetting. Although it doesn't appear so, you will actually be charging the battery, just without waking the motherboard.

I finally took my iPhone into the Apple store.  It took them 15 seconds to determine that it was a hardware problem and replaced the phone.
They confirmed this by holding down both the button on the top (power) and the button on the front of the phone for 15 seconds.  When nothing happened, they plugged it into a working USB connector to a MacBook and when that did nothing, they replaced the phone.

i think my iphone may be really dead..... ive done everything u guys hv said. charged overnight.... still no reaction.... still dead...

any more possibilities? im ready to try its swimming capabilities ina bucket of water! :)

I had the exact same problem, but the weird thing is that my phone was fully charged when it died, I think this is related to the new version 2.0 software upgrade, ever since I did the upgrade the phone is very slow to respond to different tasks, esp opening emails. I was trying to open an email with images in it when the phone battery just died. Nothing worked until I tried resetting the iphone by holding the sleep button and home button for several seconds. and guess what, the battery was totally drained. i wonder what caused the battery to drain so abruptly...  thanks for the tip anyway!

If you have some problems with your iphone like it wont turn on or it wont react even though you tried all these stuff written above....there is the last possibility before you have to go to an apple store....and hope that they fix or replace it! you have to bring your phone to the DFU modus...for it follow the next steps: start itunes and plug-in your iphone even if it is turn off or it just shows the apple logo.... further press down the power button for about 3 second, then press the home button WITHOUT release the power button and hold both simultaneous at least 15 second.... finally release the power button and continue hold the home button for about 30 seconds... now the iphone should be detected by itunes. it ought to recommend to restore it to the factory defaults! after that you iphone should works correct again... hope my instructions are useful and let me know if it works on ur iphones!

i had the same problem
and i tried holding down the power button and that did not work.
then i read a bunch of these comments and saw people trying the power button and the home button at the same time.
i tried this and held it down for about 5 seconds and got nothing.
i was starting to get really frustrated.
then i pressed them again angrily and held them for about 20 seconds.
and the start up screen with the apple came up.
i was really happy.
and it took a while for it to actually turn on but it did.
i was relieved.
now it is working.
hopefully this will not happen again and i hope that apple or att will fix this because i do not want a scare like that again.
after all my phone is only about a month old.

right top button on iphone and home button on the face of the phone. Hold BOTH down and it will work

unplug your iphone from your pc
leave the cable in the iphone
start Itunes (leave the phone unpluged from the pc for now)
Hold down the power button and the home button until your screen goes blank
release the power button but keep holding the home button and connect your iphone back to your pc
keep the home button held for 20-30 seconds
Itunes will see your phone
restore with itunes

I just had the same problem.
My phone died for no reason and would come on.
First held down the power buttons for 40 seconds. - no luck
Second tried holding down the power and home buttons for 20 seconds - Still no luck
Tried holding the home button for 30 seconds and
pluging the usb cord in to the phone end while holding the home button - still nothing
LAST out of desperation, i combined all three, I held the power and home buttons for 40 seconds or so and pluged in the usb to the phone while holding both buttons. Fifteen seconds later, to my shock and relief, I was looking at an apple logo.

mine has been not turning on for the past two days. I was freaking out because when i plugged it into itunes it said it was charging so i knew it was not dead. I got on here to see what the problem was. It probably just froze. I held down the power/sleep button and the home button at the same time. Keep holding it for no more than a minute and it the apple logo should appear and it will stay the apple logo for a few minutes before going to your slide screen. it works and it if doesnt then thats nots whats wrong with your iphone/itouch

i unlocked my phone and when it restared it wouldnt load and just get stuck at the apple!
so i held the home and powerbutton at the same time and reinserted the usb cable until i got a response! it sent me straight to itunes to restore my settings! thanks for everybody charing their problems and solutions

My Iphone was dead I then went to charge my phone went to bed and in the morning my Iphone would not turn on for nothing. Ok, so i had this problem and now it's SOLVED!
For some time now, after i have upgraded my Iphone 2G to the 2.2.1 version, my iphone kept giving me an error that goes something like "this accessory is not made to work with iphone"...
After some 2-3 weeks of this error at least once a day, at some moment i forgot to charge my iphone and the battery went empty after night. In the morning it have noticed it can't charge, can't reset, can't go into DFU, etc. I have tried all the tricks found on numerous forums but nothing.
What i did to solve this problem is:
1. I have opened my iphone using a cutter and a screwdriver. You can find info on how to open your iphone on google.
2. i took out the batery nicely cutting the three wires at the midle (black=minus, red=plus, white=ground).
3. Following the instructions at

i took two wires from the usb of my computer (V BUS (5V) and Ground) and joined them with the wires from the battery of my Iphone. (USB 5V+ to Battery plus / USB Ground to battery minus). You could use i guess any charger that outputs DC 5V, but i didn't had any in hand.
4. I left the battery charging for about two hours.
5. I deconected the batery from the usb "charger" and joined the wires back on the Iphone, as they first were. ! be carefully at the exact order of the wires, and don't short-chircuit the wires together or touch the Iphone board with them. Isolate them with duct tape or whatever you have handy. (i have used paper :) i know ... )
6. I put the Iphone back together.
7. My Iphone booted after pressing the upper right power button at first try. It can charge and is detected by the computer, i can restart it, DFU, whatever.
8. I have upgraded my Iphone to 3.0 as the problem seemed to be related to some update/unlock procedure for 2.2.1.
In the past 3 days my Iphone haven't complained about anything, no errors, no "this accessory is not made to work with iphone", it seem to work just fine.
BE VERRY CAREFOULY if you decide to do this, but I think it is worth a try as otherwise your Iphone will remain a paper weight anyway.

ok then guys, i had a completely unresponsive iphone for over a month. i pulled it out of the draw ready to sell it. heres what I did to get it to power so that i could reset.

1. Unscrew iphone screws at bottom.
2. Get a suction cup (mine was off sat nav holder) and the front of the phone will easily come up.
3. All wires are numbered, take out numbers 1, 2 and 4. number 3 is a pain in the arse and is not worth removing because it is only for the speaker. Ive learnt the hard way and broke the connection and now only have speakerphone to rely on.
4. Put them al back together (they only push on)
5. Do the reset thingy ( hold top and bottom buttons for 10 seconds) and do this twice.


Hey it worked for me guys and I've bought a second iphone to replace the one ive now got working and i wouldn't be afraid to open the phone, if you have no warranty/insurance you have nothing to loose, and if you do have warranty/insurance then you would just send the phone back to be replaced wouldn't you?

well same thing happened to me but the solution was much simpler i tried doing everything but with the iphone plugged on to the charger...nothing happened...after charging it a few seconds, i just had to unplug the cord from the charger but leave the iphone plugged on to the cord and it turned on immidietly...

As has been previously stated but it so simple it can't be stated enough hold down 'home' and 'on/off' till the Apple logo appears. My iPhone has frustrating me all afternoon as it won't work it any of the USB ports on my PC and I even borrowed a friends charger, but I held in home and on/off for ~10-12 seconds and it's all good. x

What if its the motherboard and theres no apple store near by??

After having the same problem, I followed some of the postings' advice. What worked : plugging in iphone to mac with USB cable, then after 10 min, pushing home and reset button (upper top) at the same time for 15 seconds (doing this before connecting to mac with USB cable did not work even though the phone's battery is not dead).

your iphone's battery drained completely. there are a couple ways to get past this, but they aren't always guaranteed to work.

first
attach the iphone to your computer using a separate cord. this will rule out it just being the charger itself that's defective

try holding down the sleep/wake button for ten seconds, followed by holding down the home button for thirty seconds after releasing the sleep/wake button, this usually forces the iphone to wake up

no dice?
time for a reset!

third:
press and hold the sleep/wake button + Home button for thirty seconds at the same time. this should run a factory reset on your phone. Yeah, it's a pain in the *** trying to get all of your old settings back, but it's better than paying for a new phone AND getting your old settings back.

Still no dice?

fourth
try to replace the battery on your own. you'll need a paperclip (remove the sim tray) a case opener tool (guitar picks work fine) and a #00 phillips screwdriver. flatheads occasionally work too. you can find further instructions easily if you look up Iphone takeapart or iphone battery replacement. doing this WILL void your warranty though. If you stil have a warranty and none of the above steps fixed it, definitely take it into apple.

if all else fails...
sell your iphone on ebay. depending on the model and the memory, you should be able to fetch a hundred bucks or so at least for it

solution 27 worked for me.i jailbroke my phone and then installed an app that required rebooting my phone.but it just cept on rebooting for like 3 days non stop.thanks to solition 27 i could restore the phone to factory setting and then do a recovery settings uptade.and now it works fine.

yea i left my phone dead all night and i plugged it in for a few hours and all it did was show the lightning bolt and red battery. never seemed to increase power. all i did was hold home and power till screen went off then turned it on with the power button. thanks!

i have an unlocked iphone. i downloaded sms messenger then it told me to reboot the phone so i did. i turn the phone back on and the apple appeared but it just stays there on that screen. i tried holding it down for like 10 seconds the home key and the button on top but it just does the same thing the apple screen appears back on there i need some help please
