SOURCE: Honeywell Gas Furnace

A Make and Model number of the furnace not the thermostat will help but I can walk you thru the operation of a typical furnace. It sounds to me that the burners are igniting properly but the flame sensor is not sensing the flame and shutting down the system. You will need to find the sensor and clean it and check the wire from it to the control board. Typically, the flame sensor is found at one side or the other of the burner box. It is a small probe that the flame hits. Depending upon your model it may have a small wire attached to it leading back to the control. Or it may be part of your auto-pilot assembly. ? At any rate, you will need to get to it and very delicately brush it off. Then inspect the flame channel. This is a trough area where the flame travels to ignite all burners. Over time, they tend to fill with rust and debris. Take a small screwdriver and run the blade down the trough. Inspect the wire that goes from the flame sensor to the control board. Make sure it is not frayed or broken or shorting out and that the connection at the board is good.

Beyond that, it's time for a technician to come.

Let us know the Make and Model of the furnace (found inside the furnace cabinet) and maybe we can help you further.

Try cleaning the flame sensor. It is located right besides the last burner. Looks like a thick piece of wire. Take steel wool and gently remove the carbon that has built up. Should only take 4 or 5 strokes. Let me know how it goes after that. ken

Look at the contactor on the condensing unit, remove the low voltage wires to the contactor and turn on the system. If the low voltage fuse doesn't blow, replace the contactor.

I think I'd have it checked for a bad heat exchanger. At the very least, make sure you have working Co2 detectors on all levels of the house. You should not be smelling gas from your hear ducts. This is not normal. If anyone in the house is developing a head ache, that would indicate a heat exchanger problem.

I have an amana 90 10 years old the blower starts and the igniter glows but the gas does not come out and ignite. the furnace tries three times to start but quits after three tries. What can I do

Hello,1st check that the gas valve is on (the knob on top).2nd check that the gas handle is open in the gas pipe next to the unit.3rd was any work performed on the gas service (new gas stove, clothes dryer, hot waterheater, fireplace) there might be air in the gas pipe that has to be purged out.It is safe to reset the unit and let it attempt to light 3 trys.(turn the power switch on/off) untill the air is out.Listen for a "click" from the gas valve thats is when the gas is on.It is a fuel supply problem,is the gas to the house turned on?any street digging in front of the house by others?Your utility company can check.

Solid red typically means bad controller. Try unplugging the furnace, wait about 30 secs, then plug it back in. The possibility that the controller was sending voltage to the valve even when there was no flame is a bad sign. If the controller starts the furnace, watch it very closely and see what it does. If the solid light comes back on, it's time for a new board.

Your hot surface igniter may be bad. It may be cracked which would prevent it from starting the burner flame.
