Question about Maytag Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

MH6701XX I tried to heat up a cup of coffee while my daughter had a pan of potatoes boiling on the stove up underneath it and within 1 second of turning it on, there were very loud popping sound. Not like the popping sound you get when you accidentally put something metal in there but louder. We thought maybe it was the cup so I transferred it to a plastic cup and the same thing happened. Last night my other daughter was trying to soften up some butter she didn't get the popping sound but it wasn't heating up either. We've boiled items before and never had this problem. What could it be?

SOURCE: I was boiling water on

Hi,

I would say the transformer for the power supply has probably shorted, or another major component in the power supply has shorted - This may be repairable if easily spotted, but most likely will not be cost efective.

I'd bet you mean MH7100XYB0?

If one follows the safety tips and testing procedures linked below, do-it-yourself repairs are safe and affordable.

#1 http://www.microwavedisplay.com/safety.txt

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you don't find yours, or if you want to look at it without disassembling the oven, you can download it here.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

SOURCE: I have a GE JVM240 spacemaker microwave oven. When

Actually, you should always use the hood vent exhaust fan when you're cooking on the stovetop, but I don't think that caused this problem, although it's possible.

Instead I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, which is a pretty easy fix.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

How to heat cooked potatoes for mashed potatoes

hi Judy.
Put in the large pot as you peel and slice so they don't turn brown. Be sure water covers the potatoes by 2 inches, on medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce to medium-low heat, cook the potatoes for 20 minutes until the potatoes are soft and fork tender. Turn off the heat, and drain well in a colander.24 Nov 2015

Fan comes on by itself and won't turn off.

Is it a micro hood? If so, and you're cooking on the stove below, it may be that the microwave is getting too warm. Some of them have an automatic fan the comes on when you're cooking below them - especially when boiling potatoes or something else steamy.

first suspect is the inverter board (power) and magnatron a distant second----in either case the part involved unless an expensive unit is pricey.

Will tin foil in the microwave ruin it completely? The microwave turned off after my son mircowaved a potato wrapped in tin foil.

You should always put a spoon in a cup of liquid that you heat in a microwave oven.
The microwave with a potato wrapped in tin foil is like operating the oven with nothing in it! If the microwave was spotlessly clean then your in trouble.
1 put a cup of cold water in the microwave and set for 5 minutes. if the water boils then your lucky if it cold then go and buy a new microwave and stop your childs allowance for a fortnight.
One might ask the question how old is your child and should they be using such a machine unsupervised!

I have a new microwave MSE 23 i bought it 1 month ago. It has been working fine maybe use it 6 times a week. I put jacket potatoes in tonight when i went to get them out they had not cooked but felt...

If your microwave oven is ONLY 1 month old and there is any question with its performance, it should still be under warranty from the manufacturer so I would bring it back to where you purchased it and have them provide a replacement of have them demonstrate that the one youi have is working to spec. Conversely, if you put large potatoes in the microwave, they havea lot of mass to them and will need to cook for quite a while.. Have you tried anything else in there of smaller proportions and those did not cook? You should be able to boil a cup of room temp water in a minute or two.. If that fails.. bring it back..

Hope that helps

What is the time for a 8oz cup of beverage to heat?

Depends on the power of the oven and to what temperature you are trying to heat it.

My rule of thumb is that a cup of water should boil in 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 minutes for microwaves rated at 1200 watts and 700 watts respectively.

Does this answer it?

Boiling water

This is not unusual, and it can reuslt in a nasty burn.

It may help if you be sure the sides of the container are wet before you heat it.

Also, after heating, if you push the microwave back and forth a little bit before opening the door, that may trigger the outburst in a safer manner.

Even better, if this happens a lot with a certain container, put a wooden (non-metallic) spoon in the container before you heat it.

Here's an interesting article about this from Snopes:
http://www.snopes.com/science/microwave.asp

And an advisory from the FDA:
