Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd computer then plug them back in restart your this should activate the found new hardware wizard. If this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem "you only need to do the following" if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. if this fails to fix the problem

It could be a problem with the lens you could use a liquid type lens cleaner place 2-3 drops on top of a cd/dvd then run it Hope this helps

SOURCE: HP Pavilion a220n cd-rw won't burn

Have you tried this firmware update from HP yet. This particular update from June 2004 indicates that it primarily addresses an audio performance issue, but rarely do any firmware updates also not address media recognition that would help the CD/DVD writer both read and write to specific blank media.
It is highly unlikely but not impossible that a virii infection would cause you inability to write to media, much more likey that the CDwriter is trying to give up the ghost. Before assuming to much tho, get some canned compressed air and blow into the cdwriter with tray open. This may more a simply issue of some foreign material sitting on the lens of the laser that allows you write to media. Be aware while this may be the latest firmware from HP on this particular CDwriter, that does not mean that there are not other later firmware updates from other souces. HP and all the OEM companies have a bad habit of taking their time about issuing updates and rarely if ever follow a product to completion of its update cycle. In other words remember this is a Sony product, not a HP product even tho it is in a HP computer.
If more information is needed come back to us and don't forget to rate us, as that is the only compensation we are getting for these long drawn out explanations and research on your product or problem.

SOURCE: Boot CD is not being recognized when trying to install hard drive

Why not use the Vista disc to format the drive. At the bottom of the Install screen after the License Agreement you should see Drive Options (Advanced) where you can select the partition. You may have to create the partition using the New option, but formatting is automatic with the Vista install. If you are not able to do this something may not be correct with the drive setup - either jumpers or BIOS settings.

540 wont boot up

The hard drive could be corrupt, this will cause the operating system to run the error checking. If you had a virus, and it infected any windows files, windows will check the files, but if it can\'t fix them, then it won;t run. You can try to enter safe mode, tapping F8 at boot, you should see a option to repair or restore. If not see if you can enter Safe Mode.

In safe mode you can go to start button, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore.

You can also get a windows install disk, same version as you have, and put in the disk and hit F11, and boot from the disk, and run a repair from it.

You really should go to the website Avira, and download the rescue disk, burn it to a CD. This will run a virus scan of the hard drive before windows in DOS.
If there is a virus, it will kill it. But there is a chance it can\'t clean the virus and windows won\'t start.

The other option is to just erase the hard drive, not format, erase it with a program like Active kill disk. Then reinstall windows, all the drivers.

I get a disk read erroroccurred after I have installed a new hard disk. How can I get my computer going again?

The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

> there is no icon for the CD-drive

Probably means that either:
* no electrical power is reaching the CD-ROM drive
* no "data" is being transferred to/from the drive
* the electronics inside the CD-ROM drive have "died"

Check the "power" and "data" connectors.

If necessary, replace the drive with a new CD/DVD reader/writer.

Have a virus in the harddrive nothing of importance on computer I would like to format harddrive .I have another xp cd to use need instuction on how to do this please help

What I am about to tell you is not a normal solution. If you don't have anti virus to use to clear the virus out or access to another computer to get something like "Stinger" from McAfee you can format and install the OS again but if you don't do it just right the virus will just put itself back in. This assumes you don't want to save any information on the drive whatsoever. Get a DOS boot disk from another computer and write protect it. Remove the battery from the laptop and connect the power cord. Insert and boot the computer from your DOS boot disk. I prefer to use "Knoppix" for this procedure because it is a Linux based OS that runs from the CD Drive and is Free. Cost about $3 at a used book store if you get a book with it. Using the DOS disk once the computer is booted switch to the C drive and type "part" or "fpart" this should bring up the DOS partitioning tool. Select the option to remove all partitions. Once complete reboot the computer using the DOS disk. Now Format the drive using "format c:" command. Remove the DOS disk and disconnect the power cord once the format is complete. You don't want to power down you just want to pull the cord, this is to stop the Virus from writing itself back to your disk from memory which is what will happen if you use the power button. Plug the cord back in and insert your XP CD in the drive then boot the computer from the XP CD and select to format the Drive in NTSF in the Windows installation process. This should remove all traces of the virus unless it is an MBR virus in which case you will have to get a tool like "Stinger" from McAfee. This tool is free to down load and can be run from a 3 1/2 floppy that is formated as a boot disk. The process will get rid of most viruses but something like 123MBR or any of the other MBR viruses will remain because they write themselves to the Master Boot Record which is the first thing the computer loads once it reads the Drive. These MBR viruses are read into memory when the computer starts which is why that are so hard to get rid of and a simple Format doesn't really touch the upper segments of the Master Boot Record where they reside that is why you had to do a partition in the beginning of the process.
