Sounds like you need to replace the bearings supporting the shaft. Not an easy job without the proper tools and if you haven't done it before.

Starts to spin and gets off balance

is the unit level right to left front to back ....if not adjust leveling legs and the tighten locking nuts on leveling leggs.... if unit is level either the tub shocks called dampers are worn they connect the tub to the bottom of the washer and allow a gentle ride while spinning ,,, if they dont look worn or broken the you have a rear bearing and spider support problem and that may be little more than you want to spend on part's consist of seperating the inner and outer tub removing spider support on back of inner tub and replacing seal and bearing on rear outer tub very time consuming and many peopleese parts check owners manual on parts and labor on thst replace washer ....check warranty

Hight pitch sound at the spin circle.

The outer tub bearing is worn out but the problem is it's not repairable or replaceable. Replacement of the complete outer tub assembly is required to resolve the noise problem. The outer tub assembly costs between $400 and $500.

Remove the rear access panel and allow the washer to spin then verify the source of the noise which is likely to be the outer tub bearing right behind the drum pulley.

Tub vibrates and hits side walls on spin cycle.

Open the top, and look for worn or broken vibration dampers between the outer tub and the cabinet walls. Shake the tub to help locate the problem areas. Hope this helps!

Spin cycle has become out of balance

The vibration damper(s) may be broken, disconnected, or worn out. Remove the top so that you can see the sides of the outer tub (assuming a top-loader machine), and shake the outer tub in various directions while watching the damper positions. There should be at least three such dampers, maybe more, and they can be several types from friction pads to tiny automotive-looking shock absorbers. If the tub seems offset to one side, look for one of the absorbers that may be out of place or disconnected. Hope this helps.

Maytag washer MAV551EEWW top load with loose tub

If the tub seal lets go water will weep into the tub bearing. This will rust the basket shaft and normally wreck the tub bearing. Once the bearings starts to get worn enough it usually gets very noisy. The tub bearing is pressed onto the outer back half of the tub shell assembly. Normally need to replace the inner basket/shaft assembly  and the outer shell with the tub bearing.
Sometimes the inner basket support will crack, this can give an clicking or banging noise as well.

Pictures of this job...
A sure indication was the brown junk/gookus leaking out if the rear bearing area and the belt has spewed it around in the drum that the rear bearing and seal was bad...

The whole outer shell and basket come out to do this repair....what bad bearing and rusted shaft looked like...

I had to remove the back panel. Undo the pump hose & water level hose, remove the 2 shocks, remove the motor, undo the front boot from the outer panel and remove the 2 springs to lift the whole assembly out from the back to work on it.

Worn outer tub

yea youl need to replace the tub alright, cgances are the bolts holding the inner tub to the transmission shaft have also broken off, which is why the inner tub spun off kilter and rubbed a hole in the outer tub,. the bolts (2 of them ) woulds have benn locking the inner basket to the tranny shaft, visible after removing the agitator
