Sounds like something happened to the wiring harness in the column. The air bag circuit is in a different harness.

SOURCE: Remove me Steering wheel bmw 1999 e46 3 series

Disconnect negative battery cable. Locate airbag retentions on back of steering wheel. Unbolt or unclip retention devices, and release airbag. Then: Unplug airbag electrical connector. Remove nut or bolt in center of steering wheel with pneumatic impact wrench if necessary . Using appropriate steering wheel removal tool kit, carefully remove steering wheel, paying attention to associated wires, etc. Unplug anything not accompanying wheel, or that is in the way. Pay close attention to any rods, or contact pieces associated with the horn button(s.) Replace these upon reinstall. Reverse order to install including tightening center bolt to 35-55 ft-lbs. If this is your first stg wheel removal, try an old chevy, preferrably someone else's! If inexperienced, don't risk bruising your favorite Bimmer!!! Hope this helps you make your decision. SOURCE: Steering Wheel Radio and Cruise Control stopping

This is due to a broken clockspring behind the steering wheel. It works as a constant contact for all acessories on the steering wheel to include the air bag system. It is a simple ribbon of wire to allow for turning of the wheel incased in a plastic housing that shouldn't be messed with. If you mess with it internally, you run the risk of the airbag deploying in your face!! It is best purchased from BMW.

The horn switch and the air bag and cruise control wiring in the steering wheel go through the clock spring, ford calls it air bag sliding contact. The clock springs have been know to go bad.

On my 2004 mercury sable, the horn and cruise control has stopped working. I know the horn still works (still honks when I lock the doors), and I have checked the fuses which seem to be in working order. ...

Since I can't find a bad fuse, I'll check the clockspring.
icon1.gif You must emove the air bag in the steering wheel to get to the clock spring. Unless you feel you understand the air bag system 100%, and feel comfortable disconnecting the air bag, I suggest you take it to a professional for repair. This is not hard to fix. The Airbags are already disabled by if your airbag light is on. This is done automatically when the system senses a fault to protect occupants. What you have to do is unsrew the 2 screws on the side of the steering wheel and then remove the cables that go to the airbag and cruise control. Then you need to unscrew the one star bolt that holds the steering wheel in and use a steering wheel pully to pull off the steering wheel and there should be 3 screws holding the clockspring in. You need to remove the clockspring and replace it with one from the junk yard. Theres no reason why someone should charge you for more than 1 hour labor to do this. It doesnt take longer than that make sure you dissconnect battery first before you do this is your air bag light staying on

Cruise control stopped working horn doesn't work Air bag light is on

If the air bag light is on, the horn does not sound when the pad is depressed (but does souns when you activate the alarm) and the cruise control doesn't work (but the lamp lights up when you first turn the key on), your issue is probably with the clockspring. This is a device that keeps an electrical connection between the steering wheel and the rest of the car regardless of steering wheel position.

Horn and cruise control dont work, what to do?

You will have to replace the entire clockspring. I highly recommend having it done at a repair shop because it involves removing the air bag which contains a small explosive device and can be dangerous to someone not trained in removing it.

Cruise control, and horn do not work + air bag light came on

You need what is called a clock spring. It is located behind the steering wheel. Some of these had a recall on them. Check with your dealer to find out.
