Car amplifier instalation

I have a 2005 chevy silverado with bose speaker system with the subwoofer mounted under the center console. what wires to the amp do i need to splice into in order to receive a singnal to route to another amp to power another subwoofer.

Ur doin too much...you only use two amps to run a common subwoofer...if you want two subs either hook them both up to the amp you have, or get a bigger amp...hopefully this helps

BassLink LC Remote Level Control

Overview: The BassLink LC allows you to adjust the volume of BassLink powered subwoofer.

Installation: The BassLink LC may be mounted under the dash or may be dismantled and mounted inside the dash for a factory appearance.

Under-dash Mounting: Select a mounting location that allows easy, safe access to the control while driving. The BassLink LC has mounting "ears" to use as a template for drilling pilot holes. Attach screws through the "ears" to secure the BassLink LC to the mounting surface.
In-dash Mounting: Disassemble the BassLink LC by removing the Phillips-head screws on the front, rear, and top panels. Remove the bottom and side panels and disengage the RJ11 connector from the back panel. Choose a mounting location that allows easy, safe access to the control, and provides 1-3/4" clearance behind the mounting surface. Drill a 9/32" hole in the mounting surface. Feed the BassLink LC's potentiometer (with the knob removed) through the hold and use the nut provided to hold the control in place.
Connecting to BassLink: Route the cable behind the dash or other interior panels and under the carpet. Do not route the cable outside the vehicle. Connect the cable on both ends.

Universal Interface: Front and rear, left and right Universal interface speaker-level inputs (for use with the supplied speaker-level input wiring harnesses)

I have an mtx amplifier. it worked for a while then it just cut out, still turns on, no blown fuses, no smoke or funny smell, speakers work. what could be wrong with it


Looking at alot of the unsolved FixYa problems - I can see alot of "My amplifier is going into protect mode - How do I fix it?"

There is no catch all or simple answer. Troubleshooting2.gif steps must be taken to determine what is causing the problem.

It is one of 3 things....

1. Impedence under rated value or Thermal Protection.
2. Short to ground in wiring.
3. Internal Component Failure.


One of the more confusing things with a car stereo can be when the amplifier goes into protection mode. One minute it's working and the next minute it's not. Here's a brief troubleshooting method that will hopefully help you if your amplifiers ever go into protection.

1. Try to determine the cause. Amps2.gif can go into protection mode for several reasons. Knowing what happened before it cut out can help determine how to fix it.
Did the amp not work as soon as it was turned on?
Did it happen after blasting for hours (may be thermal overload and it needs to cool)?
Did it cut out after you hit a bump (a wire connection may have come loose)?

2. Tear it down. Get the amp down to it's most basic state. Remove all of the speaker wiring and RCA wiring and leave only the power, ground and remote leads connected. If you still have a problem in this state then either your amp is defective or you may have an installation problem such as the amp touching metal.

Remember that an amplifier2.gif should only be connected to the vehicle through the power and ground terminals. Mounting the amplifier to the metal of the vehicle, including putting the mounting screws into metal, can cause problems for your amplifier.

Always mount the amplifier to a non-conductive surface. An easy way to accomplish this is to mount the amplifier to a wood board and then mount the board to the vehicle.

3. If the amp is OK in this torn down state keep adding the other wires back on until you find what causes the problem.
Add the RCA cables first.
Then add the speaker wires one at a time.
If the speaker wires cause the problem then they are probably touching metal or have a blown voicecoil.
Check to make sure that a speaker wire isn't being pinched somewhere between the amp and the speaker.
Also check that the speaker wire or speaker terminals aren't touching the vehicle metal near the speaker opening.
Rear decks and door panels can easily touch unprotected speaker terminals if not properly installed.

If the problem starts occuring when you connect the subwoofer wires to the amplifier you may have your subwoofers wired at too low an impedence. First check the spec's on your amplifier to make sure what kind of loads it is stable under. Then check the wiring configuration to make sure that your load is not too low:

If you believe your amplifier is defective contact the manufacturer first. Many have flat repair rates that are very affordable and cover parts and labor.

However local repair shops may be cheaper if it is just a small repair.

Compare the manufacturer's repair rate to that of a local shop. If you don't know the reputation of the local shop it may be better to send it to the manufacturer who will have working knowledge of the amp and parts readily available.

if it has factory bose system, you will need a aftermarket converter box for bose systems, from there most should be able to finish it out.

Amplifier turns on but not the subwoofer?


Hello thedj3214,

You can find the color codes for a 1999 Buick Regal here. There is no dedicated amp remote wire. Neither is there a power antenna wire.

You could use the 12V "switched lead (yellow) from the radio or any switched 12V lead directly from the vehicle fuse box. I'd wire it through a dash mounted toggle switch so as to be able to turn the amp on and off manually.

The Sony 2150GSX is a 2-channel amp with the speaker terminals on either side. You do not want to ground the subwoofer itself, only the ground terminal should be connected to bare metal on the vehicle chassis or body as close to the amp as possible. The ground wire does not need to be run to the negative battery terminal.

A ground on one of the speaker leads will probably cause the amp not to power up. A ground on a speaker wire usually activates the amps protection circuit, causing it to not operate until the fault is corrected.

I have a 04 silverado with factory bose stereo. I have installed a Xplod xm-zr604 and the sub is playing but it will not crank up. Its as if the volume is very low.I have tie in after the factory amp for...


If you dont have a line level converter with adjustable output - get one.

Your amplifier only amplifies the signal it gets - and if its a very low voltage - you wont get as much output from the ampifier.

I always recomend PAC converters. They are a little more expensive - but are #1 adjustable, and #2 they also make one with voltage sensing. You wire up a positive power source, and when it detects voltage from the speaker wires - it will send a remote turn on to your amplifier. (MTX has this technology built in to its amplifiers)

No more crawling under the dash or removing the factory radio!!!
