Check your CRO . The compressor may be getting high suction pressure on start ie: like out of defrost. should be set at no higher than 40 psig. you can even drop it to 30 psig. You may have to install a valve
before the CRO to see evap pressure before the CRO valve. If it does not have a CRO you can install one with a CROT-0/60. It has an access on it.

Freezer Unit Isn't Functioning

Inside the refrigeration system alot is goning on. You have to check the pressures low/high to determine the problem. It is easy to say that your unit needs freon but that is not always the case.
here is a list of possible problems:
dirty condenser
dirty evapoator
fans not working
defrost not working
lost of freon
bad compressor
bad compressor valves
slugging
flooding
lack of oil
super heat off
txv is stuck open/close not sensing
incompatilbe unknown freon mix...

well these are just some of the problems you can encounter. this was meant to tell not fix because each problem needs attention but hope this was a little helpful anyways

Ice forming on copper pipe coming from compressor

Hi, It is not uncommon for the suction line on a unit to have ice on it when cooling. This means that where the ice starts forming on the line, there is liquid freon there. But, if it continues to get worse, would indicate a problem as you don't want liquid freon to enter the compressor as it will burn out the valves, or slug it as we say. Icing of this line can be from a few things. Low on freon will cause it to ice up. The freezer fan/evaporator fan motor not working. The freezer iced over real bad. An over charged system will do this, but you haven't had to charge it. Check the fan I mentioned and keep an eye on this line and monitor the units temperature. If you start to loose your cooling then we need to go from there. I can't prevent it from forming ice unless I was on site to install my service gauges to check the internal condition. Please keep me posted though. If the freezer fan is not running, this would be the problem and would need to be replaced. If you had excess to a volt meter and it wasn't running, you could check power to this motor. Let me know if it is not running and check the temperatures closely.
Good Luck,

Our upright freezer is only freezing halfway up. have had the fan checked and it is ok. When i turn the freezer on, I hear the fan start up, but within five seconds, a click can be heard and it stops. I...

This is a reach here---it sounds like it could be low on refrigerant---but hold it---have you moved this unit from one spot to another--if so it needs set for 24hr before energizing it--also has mice made a nest in the compressor-condenser area---they may chewed on some wires--on some unit there a heater on bottom of compressor to keep the refer in gas so not to slug the compressor with refer liquid since liquid does not compress maybe locking up compressor. 13 months old Kenmore compressor very hot.

lacdoi,
huuum At your service!

You said,
The warranty just ran out, Sears came out told me needs a control board ($210 for just labor to replace) not sure about part price. I though a new freezer is about twice his labor and parts, so I sent him away minus $65.
I did some troubleshooting today, pull the plug for 2 days. Plug it in, temp alarm goes on all the time. Turn alarm off, left the freezer running for 4hrs.
Not cold at all, some cool air. Fan is on, compressor is on (can hear humming noise and is vibrating). Compressor is very hot to the touch, could burn finger.
Should I call Sears again, wonder how much to fix all the problem? Or just give up, look for another brand new one (not Kenmore).

MY ADVICE:
Sounds like a big repair bill and multiple problems

How old is the appliance?

If the appliance is 10 years old or more you may not be advisable to put good money into bad!
New appliance are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!!!!
Replace it.

You will be fine

Bless You huuum
