Question about Sony PS3 PlayStation 3 80GB Blu-Ray Game Console

1 Answer

My PS3 only has a green light when it is powered on

It started overheating some months ago so when I opened in and cleaned some dust out of it, it stopped working. When it is powered on now, there is only a green light,there is no connection of the controllers, the blue ray light doesn't start even if there is a disk inserted into it and the HDD access light and Wi-Fi lights don't come on or even blink.

SOURCE: What's wrong with the ps3 when you turn it on it

Sounds like an overheating issue to me. Make sure to keep it in a well ventilated area. Also, the next time you turn it on, put your hand near the vents to see if any hot air is being expelled through them. If there is NO air being expelled, you have a bad fan. It may also be that the heatsinks aren't conducting enough heat from the processors...this could be due to bad thermal paste. You may need to send it in for repair for this you can call 1800mysony.

I hope this helps! If this did help you, please give a thumbs up!

I'm afraid you have gotten the Yellow Light of Death ( YLOD ) you will need to have your PS3 repaired by a technician or you can Google YLOD and you will find a repair guide.

My ps3 keeps freezing but I ha ent played with it

Freezing is a sign of overheating. Try cleaning your PS3 with your vacuum. If it keeps freezing you might need to open it and replace your thermal paste.

Sounds as though the system may have overheated. Do you regularly check the filters and clean them? An airduster can also help to blow dust out of hard to reach places.

Hi mttwlsn16,

If you noticed that system recently freezes up, it migth be overheating or full of dust. There are several ways on how to check the issue, either you clean the system or place it in a cool area. Here are some ways to troubleshoot the problem.

1. Turn off the system completely then disconnect it from the power outlet. Press and hold down the power button for 15-20 seconds. Try to restart the system now. If still has the same problem proceed to step 2.

2 .Try to Unplug and replug all the cables.

3 .Take out the hard-drive, and put it back in after your console has been started up.

4. Make sure that you have at least 60% of the hard drive space free.

5. Clean your game discs with a micro-fiber cloth.

6. Clean the ps3 from dust. You can Use a micro-fiber cloth and use vacuum accessories to clean the dust from the grills and fans.

Alternative solution to remove the dust:
--> turn off the system by switching it off from the back. Please make sure that there's no inserted disc on the system.
--> Now hold the eject button and while holding it try to switch it back on. Fan will run for about 20-30 seconds and it will clean up the dust.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Cut off and light is red; quickly you see green;yellow then flashing red.

The PS3 YLoD can be caused by a number of things. Most commonly, it's a result of a hardware failure, overheating, dust build-up inside the system, and occasionally just due to loose cables.

Let's start with the easy stuff first to narrow down the cause. Follow the steps below:

1. Assuming you were playing your PS3 when the YLoD happened, move your PS3 into an open area with a lot of ventilation and let it cool down for 20-30 minutes. Once it's cool, try to turn it back on and see if that helped. If not, go to Step 2.

2. Unplug all of your cables from the PS3 including the A/V and the power cord. Also unplug the power cable from the wall. Now try to plug them all back in and make sure they are all secure. Turn the PS3 back on and check if it's working. If not, go to step 3.
How to Fix PS3 Yellow Light on Your Own

3. Get a vacuum with a hose attachment and vacuum out the vents on the system. Sometimes dust build-up alone can cause your PS3 to stop working properly. You might also want to take one of those cans of air and blow it in there to get some of the stubborn pieces of dust out.

If none of those solutions worked, the problem lies within the PS3 and you will probably need to take it apart to fix it. The most likely scenario is that your heat-shield overheated, the chipsets got shifted due to heat, and your solder could be cracked.

the causes of the yellow light of death
Here are some of the top causes of the PS3 Yellow Light of Death:

* Overheating - The unit gets too hot. Sometimes caused by too much dust buildup in the vents.
* Blu-Ray drive failure.
* Bad power supply.
* Hard-drive critical errors.
* Hardware malfunction on the motherboard - The solder starts to crack due to excessive heating and cooling.

if you have warranty then take it back if you dont then you can either try the repair yourself how ever this is not very easy to do and can cause more harm than good you will need special tools to take it apart and its not easy you also need an understanding of heat seal paste and heat sinks due to this being the part you need to remove and put back

i do the repair for about 25pound plus parts so if you are paying someone to do it then your looking at least that price, i only charge if the problem is fixed so try and get the best price you can.

let me know if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

My system and games are running really choppy. Overheating was an issue, but i bought a cooling fan about 2 months ago. Recently the fan has started to sound really bad and loud, and the whole running...

Time for a new fan, also you should try and get as much air flow underneath as possible.. have you tried those laptop coolers that the laptop sits into.. Clean any opening out of dust too.

Red lights flash when i power it on and wont let the disc enter

im sorry to tell you but it has probalbly died, it happened to me 3 months ago while playing cod5. sony still havent gave it back. i suggest to leave it and if it does boot up, clean away any dust and it should stay well, but if it doesent, you are going to have to ring up sony and tell them EXCACTLY what has happened and will get a new one within 2 eeeks or longer, and the game, it depends as i havent got it back for 2 months. So if you get a new PS3 , clean it regurley or get a engine cooler so it doesent overheat.
