How do I adjust alternator belt?


Check to see if there is a tensioner pully that adjust the belt tightness. The tension pulley a small pulley will have two bolts on it one of them loosens and tightens the belt around the alternator and compressor USUALLY.

How do i tighten the timing belt tension on a 1999 dodge stratus


The belt tensioner is not adjustable. To loosen a tensioner you would swivel the belt tensioner away from the belt with a long flex wrench or ratchet and to tighten the belt you would let the spring in the tensioner move the swivel back into the tight position. An internal spring tightens the tensioner pulley against the belt. You will need to get a smaller belt or replace the tensioner if the belt is "too loose" after you swivel it back into the tight position against the belt and release pressure.

All above is Bull Sxxxt. Isuzu bighorn Alternator belt only drives water pump (fan) and alternator. Size of belt is 17x1000 and its a tight fit onto pulleys so it makes you think its wrong belt, but trust me its not. As if you get 17x1025 or 17x1050 belt you wont get it tight correctly due to not enough adustment on alternator. To change/adjust the belt very simple. Loosen 3 bolts (14mm socket) on power steering pump (its 2 belts that diving power steering and air con), loosen tensioner on p/s pump. Remove those 2 belt - to get access to alternator belt adjustment bolts. There are 2 bolts you will need to loosen One at the bottom of alternator (14mm socket and 25mm extension bar to get it easier) another one is 12mm on tensioner rail. Than adjust tension by screwing 12mm long bolt that mounted across the tensioner rail until you get tension correct. Correct tension is about 68kg. But i do it just to get it nicely tight without too much of sag. REMEMBER DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the belt as you will crush berings on water pump or alternator.

I am trying to hange the serpentine belt on my 09 lancer rallyart and it keeps slipping off


Locate the two belts on the left side (passenger side) of your Mitsubishi Lancer. The outer belt is a serpentine belt, operating four pulleys and the inner belt is your alternator belt.

  • 2 Follow the serpentine (outer) belt to the three pulleys lined up vertically near the front of the engine compartment. Locate the middle pulley, which is the tension pulley for the belt.
  • 3 Loosen the bolt on the middle pulley with a socket wrench by turning counter-clockwise. Do not remove the bolt, just turn it a couple of times. Loosen the tensioner bolt on the side of the of the pulley, facing the front of the vehicle.
  • 4 Remove the serpentine belt and then loosen the bolt on the alternator. With the alternator loose, move it forward so that the alternator belt loosens up and then remove belt from the pulleys.
  • 5 Install the new alternator belt by placing it over both inside pulleys. Tighten the tension on the alternator belt by moving the alternator back and keeping tension on it by holding it back with a long screwdriver. While the alternator belt is tight, use a socket wrench to tighten up the bolt on the alternator.
  • 6 Place the serpentine belt back on the pulleys and then use a socket wrench on the bolt on the front of the tension pulley. Once the serpentine belt is tight, tighten up the bolt in the middle of the tension pulley.
  • 7 Start the Mitsubishi Lancer's engine to test the alternator belt and make sure it is working properly. Once you have verified it is working, turn the engine off.

    I have a 1994 chevy cavalier 2.2, i replaced the belt tensioner, how do you set the tensioner so it will keep the belt tight? I loosened the bolt and got the belt tight, then i tested it and the belt...


    U do not loosen any bolts to adjust tension.tighten all bolts first.Then with a 3/8 ratecht in the slot of the belt tensioner rotate the tensioner until you can install the belt correctly.then release the tensioner and take out the ratchet.

    I want to change two belts (A/C and Alternator) on my 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage 1.5 car. What steps I am suppose to do.


    First, feel the tightness of your belts. You will have to tighten the new belts to the proper tightness. If they are too tight, they will wear the bearings prematurely. If they are too loose, they will slip.

    Alternator Belt Removal

    1. Loosen the alternator lock nut.
    2. Loosen the adjuster bolt.
    3. Rotate the adjuster bolt counter clockwise to release the tension on the belt.
    4. Remove the belt.
    Similarly for the compressor belt

    9. Rotate the adjuster bolt clockwise until the belt is tight like it was before you removed it.

    10. Tighten the lock bolt.

    What is the bolt for the belt idler tesioner suposse to look like and can it be purchased seperately. I beleive someone put a stright bolt in as there is no collar on it to push the idler pully tight


    • I JUST HAD TO REPLACE MY 97 EAGLE TALON BELTS AND THE TENSIONER BOLT TO TIGHTEN YOUR BELT IS UNDER THE POWER STEERING PUMP THE BELT WRAPS AROUND THE BELT TENSIONER FROM THE BACK PART OF BELT THATS HOW YOU KNOW IF ITS THE TENSIONER THERE IS A BOLT ON IT THAT WHEN YOU SCREW IN IT TIGHTENS BELT AND OUT LOOSENS IT. MY BELT TENSIONER BOLT BROKE WHEN I WAS TURNING IT SO ANOTHER THING YOU CAN DO IF YOURS DONT WORK AS A TEMPORARY SOLUTION IS LOOSEN THE BOLTS FROM YOUR POWER STEERING PUMP AND PULL FORWAD SO BELT TIGHTENS AND TIGHTEN UP SCREWS SO BELT STAYS TIGHT.HOPE THIS HELPS.

    Drive belts


    If this car has a v-6 (2.5). You have to loosen the belt tensioner. It is located along the side of the passengers wheel well. Turn the passengers tire outwards, and kneel down. Look inside the wheel weel, and about the same line of sight as your eyes when you look in there you will see, a bolt, and a pulley, with a bolt in the center of the pulley. Loosen the pulley bolt first, and then loosen the tensioner bolt, Pun on belt careful to watch the routing, and pull pulley tight, with hand, and then tighten the tensinner bolt. Belt should be taught, but not very tight. Then tighten the pulley bolt.

    loosen the the two bolts (show on the figure above) first
    loosen also the bolt used for adjusting tension.
    remove the old worn-out belt.
    place the new belt (you may need to loosen further the tension adjusting bolt)
    when belt is properly place, tighten it enough the tension adjusting bolt,
    (not too tight, but not too loose) press the belt to ensure its not too loose!
    When belt tightness is enough, tighten the the other lower one of the two bolt then the lastly tighten the pivot bolt.
