Question about RCA P61939 61" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

I have a RCA P61939 61 in. Rear Projection Television. Would not power on one day. Day before it would not power off and when the remote buttons were pressed they showed different then what was pressed (pressed 2 it would show the menu, etc). Was finally able to power it off, now it won't power on. I checked the fuse and it is OK. Now I was able to power it on and there is only sound no picture. About 20 minutes later the sound just cut out. Now nothing. Is this something I could fix myself? If not any ideas on how much it would cost? Thanks for any help.

With what you are describing I would start with the power supply. This is going to be a board, not a brick. If you can find the part online this is certainly something you could do yourself. Before you do anything back there make sure it is unplugged and discharged. Televisions can pack a wallop of stored up power. Keep in mind that this is a logical starting poing but true diagnostics would require a tech to come out or drop it off at a shop. My guesstimate for a repair would be around $300.00.

Thats the classisc sign that the CP150, CP114 and CP120 capacitors need replacement. You can get the repair kit called CP150, CP120 and CP114 at www.tvrepairworld.com which contains the capacitors and the CD with step by step instructions on how to do the repair.

A lot of these have bad capacitors in the power board. You can see them look puffy or bulged if you disassemble and look. look for caps that look like this

If they are bad, you just need to replace with similar value caps and the issue should be solved. They should be flat on top, not bulged like the picture. If you have a convergence issue too, this can also be fixed on the same board, let me know if you get to soldering..

you will need a set of TORX bits to open up, make sure you pull the ac power first. Look @ the left side when you get inside for the bad caps, you may need to use a mirror to see back behind the U shaped heat sink (there is a big one behind there that goes bad)..
best of luck, keep in touch

There is a sub-board in this set that powers the convergence circuit. Often a big Ic shorts, two diodes and finally the main fuse. not something you can fix yourself.
