GPS/Fishfinder keeps dropping and restarting

I have a Simrad CE33 GPS Fishfinder.

It powers up ok but then drops and restarts itself. I have had a technician look at it and they replaced the feed power cable, but problem persists.

The set is about 5 years old.

Any ideas please.

Had an ongoing connection problem with EQ 40 fishfinder, new power cable did
not sort it completely. Cable now unavailable anyway. Resolved, permanently
I hope by my wife, the pins were not long enough to reach the sockets in the connecting plug. So I inserted a very fine spring into the sockets, reassembled the connecting plug, somewhat crunchily and it's working. The fine spring was robbed from my wifes jewellry making kit, stuff called "Tiger Tail" and used for re-inforcing necklace ends and suchlike girlie stuff. I claim no credit at all for this repair, it has had me stumped for seven years at least it was all down to my wife. Ok I'll stop grovelling now.

Do a software upgrade to the CE33 unit and then a master reset by unplugging the power cable , then press and hold PWR and CLR buttoms while plugging back the power cable. Wait a couple of second while the software reloads and should run smooth....
NOTICE: All the previous data as routes, waypoints, etc that you had will be lost by the master reset.

My simrad ca44 keeps turning itself on and off

This is almost always a power supply issue. Check and clean your positive and negative connections. Although the link below is for car batteries, the principles are the same.
If that gives you no joy, check the plug and socket of your unit. It doesn't take much corrosion to render an electronic device inoperable.

Hope this helps.

My Ap16 Simrad control head died. Any idea of as to 1) where I might get it repaired and/or 2) where I might find a replacement?

Hi John

Boy, you're up against it on this one. The AP16 is a pretty old unit for sure. Here's the link to your owners manual.

I've come across one instance in my experience where although there was enough power showing to the control head, because of corrosion and broken wire strands, there simply was too much voltage drop and not enough current flow for the unit to function when it was turned on. After cutting back/fixing the soldered connections and reconnecting the cable, the unit was good to go.

I hope this information is able to help you out.
Good luck.

Simrad CE33, I have only a blue screen when I switch it on

First thing to do is remove all cables and charts from the machine except the power cable. Try powering on and see what happens. If the same issue occurs it sounds like a boot code failure has occurred. Unfortunately, if that is the case those machines are no longer supported by Simrad and I would recommend looking around ebay or craigslist for another.

My x-96 has 12.3 vdc going to it, but drops to 7 vdc when unit is plugged in. HELP.....

Possible cause:
Most likely a too thin/long wire or a bad connection.
Are you also sure the voltage drops to 7volts? Where? On the finder? Did you check also the where the finder's power wires are connected to the main power wires?

A VOM would be an essential tool.

My st4000 mkII shuts off from auto mode whhen i engage the clutch lever and the wheel turns for a second. the screen goes blank and just displays "st4000" . voltage is fine and all wires are connected....

CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY WIRING ,If it worked before ,could be corrosion or lose wire connection,or terminal bad crimped,or terminal loose inserted.
If it is new installation ,power wires could be undersized,or battery discharged .
Normally autopilot shuts off from auto and restarts when power supply voltage drops under the reset voltage ,when the wheel turns ,the motor current increase and the power voltage drops when the power supply wires are not OK.

Dropped it on the boat deck..No longer turns on.

if it has an internal battery make sure that didn't come unhooked. if you have an external source of power it may have broken the connection inside. or it is possible the unit has internal broken parts from being dropped. the only way to fix that is to take it apart.
