Washer not draining but recirculating water - Whirlpool Washing Machines

After filling with a small amount of water it will recirculate for a while then fill again to a higher level. To recirculate the divertor has to heat up and expand the operating plunger. It takes a long time to cool & move back to the drain position. You may be advancing from recirculate to drain too quickly. Allow at least 2 minutes before trying to drain water.

The product has detected that it is losing water during recirculation.
Primary Source - Diverter Valve Wiring
Action - Check diverter valve harness is correctly fastened to diverter valve. Check flying lead
in motor controller, and connection to valve next to drain pump.
Secondary Source - Diverter Valve
Action - Check diverter valve resistance. If open circuit (nominal is 1500 ohms) replace
diverter valve. During recirculation, check that water is being recirculated back into the bowl,
and that no water is coming out of drain hose. If there is some water coming from the drain
hose, then the diverter valve could be faulty, or it could be jammed with a foreign object.
Replace diverter valve.
Tertiary Source - Motor Controller
Action - The diverter valve drive circuit may be at fault. If the primary and secondary checks
pass inspection then replace the Motor Controller.

You have gas water heater in attic?
You are installing recirculation system? Which recirculation do you have? .. so expert can read instruction manual alongside you.
You can connect the recirc return line to the water heater drain valve only IF you have plumbed a separate return line for that installation.
Otherwise, the recirculation return line recirculates into the cold water inlet on water heater.

Your diverter valve is cloged with lint and not fully closed and is letting wash water go down the drain.

Code 52 means it has had to keep on topping up the water level. You are losing water. During the initial short period when the bowl rotates & the water recirculates back up in to the bowl, check the drain hose. There should be no water escaping in to the drain. If there is then you have a problem with the divertor valve down by the drain pump. May be stuck half way.

Put a small amount of water in unit then tilt back to check. I would suspect a cracked drain pump housing.the drain pump is on the right side .left side is the recirculating pump. it is actually fairly common for these to crack the drain pump housing when a coin try's to pass through the pump.

Hi just read your posting.Does the machine drain the water at all?If the machine is recirculating the water in drain mode then your diverter must be stuck in the recirculate mode.Please look under the machine for me to the front right and you should see a red or black fan.This is your pump.Can you please reply to confirm the style of pump you have on your machine.If you do not have the pump with a fan attached to it then you have the newer type.The information on the style of pump you have will help me give you accurate information on how to rectify this fault.Looking forward to your reply.

Hi dear.Machine's pump filter is located lower left hand side.Please open the lid,pull out the drain plug & remove the water inside the tub.Turn the filter anticlock wise to take it out.Please check for any obstacle,if ther is any please clean it.Please keep in mind,your washer have 2 pumps.On left hand side for drain & right hand side for recirculation.Make sure both one works.Also check the drain hose for kink.If that's not worked,you may need to change the pump.Call service department.I hope that helps.Thanks.

It spins, but doesn't pumpIf your washer spins but doesn't pump the water out, the drain line is probably clogged. In many washers, a small sock or other piece of clothing can get between the clothes tub and the outer tub that holds the water. If the clothing gets between the tubs, it may then get into the drain hose that's attached to the pump--or even into the pump itself. If it's in the pump, you need to remove the hoses from the pump and pull the item out.

To remove the sock from the outer tub port, open the washer's main access panel and remove the large-diameter rubber hose that connects the pump to the bottom of the outer tub. Then, using needle-nose pliers, try to grab and remove the clothing through the port. 

Sometimes you can't remove the stuck clothing from below. Then you have to remove the agitator, top of the outer drum shield, and inner clothes tub. This isn't easy to do--and you may need special tools--so you might be happier getting a qualified appliance repair technician to do the job.

If the drain line isn't plugged, the problem may be with your pump. Even if the pump appears to be turning, the internal impeller may be broken. If so, you need to replace the pump.


It doesn't spin or pump
If your washer doesn't spin or pump water out but the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley. If so, you need to replace the pump. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. 


It pumps, but the water returns
If the water that pumps out of the machine goes back into the machine after the spin cycle, your washer may be siphoning the water from a laundry tub that has a slow drain, back into the washer. The usual remedy for this is to improve the draining of the laundry tub. (Is something stuck in the drain?) Also, check for these problems:

If the drain hose reaches more than about 4 inches into the laundry tub, cut off the excess. 


If your drain hose is lower than the washer's cabinet, install an air gap/siphon break assembly.
