Question about Sharp VC-H973U VHS VCR
My Sharp VCH973U just started not being able to play tapes. When I insert one, it takes it in readily, but when I press 'play' it makes a grinding sound, runs a few seconds, then stops (it doesn't spit the tape out). When I do eject the tape, though the tape isn't mangled or broken, it won't quite let it go - like it's caught around a spindle. What I like best about this unit is that I can program timed recordings from the front panel without having to use the remote (in case that breaks and is irreplaceable). Any solutions? Is it something I can fix myself? Is it worth taking to a shop to repair? Or should I just scrap it?
With these things it's best to see what is going on to see if it can be fixed. So what I suggest you do is take the top cover off and using an old tape which you don't mind getting mangled insert it and watch where it gets tangled up. Without looking into it you can't determine what's faulty.

This is usually caused by an oxidized, misaligned or defective Audio/Video drum. You can try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be serviced by a qualified service technician.
My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair cost low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.
