Question about Sewing Machines

Open Question

Will not straight stitch

I recently acquired a used Kenmore Sewing machine 158.1791. It will not perform a straight stitch. The stitch width selector is on zero (0) and the stitch selector is on straight/zigzag. The stitch modifier is in neutral. Regardless of the stitch width, it will zigzag, but only at the widest width; the dial seems to have no effect. Previously, the machine was locked up; stitch selector would not move. I have oiled heavily all over, top and bottom, greased the gears, and left all the belts dry. What should be my next effort? Where should I look or adjust next? Do I ever need to do anything with the cams? Are there diagrams of where the cam levers should be located according to the stitch selector?

How do I adjust the needle position for straight sewing?

The stitch Width selection regulates straight-stitch or zig-zag width. Needle position does not determine straight or zig-zag. Needle position just determines whether the needle's home position is center, left, or right. Needle position can be used with straight or zig-zag stitching.

CAn a brother lock 9290 sewing machine do just a straight stitch?

YES. ALL SEWING MACHINES DO STRAIGHT STITCH. EVEN IF YOU WOULD SET THE STITCH SELECTOR TO A ZIGZAG YOU COULD STILL SEW STRAIGHT STITCH BY SETTING THE WIDTH TO ZERO. OTHERWISE YOU COULD JUST USE THE STRAIGHT STITCH CHOICE.

Stitch width knob

What's the model? Do you have the stitch selector set on straight stitch, or on a stitch with a width component, like a blind hem stitch?
Some machines consider straight stitch to be a zigzag stitch of width=0, while others have separate settings for a straight stitch and a zigzag (or other) stitch.

Depends on what stitch you intend to use. I do a lot of mending with a three step zigzag set to maximum width and minimum length -- see: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/24395076 A wide, short zigzag stitch is another popular choice, as is a straight stitch worked back and forth over the area: http://www.running-w-scissors.com/2014/01/tutorial-patch-mend.html

If you're just mending a seam that's come unstitched, a straight stitch or zigzag stitch similar to what's already in the seam is what you're looking for.

Casn I use a double needle on this model?

If you have a zig-zag stitch on your machine, you have the capability of using a twin needle when using a STRAIGHT stitch. The width between the needles is the same as the width for the z-z stitch but you won't be using that stitch. Only the straight stitch.

Shark 384 - how can i get a straight stitch?

with the Shark Euro-Pro X machine, you need to bring the stitch width to zero it's the nob on top of the machine the manual states not to use it wider then 3 with the double needle cause it can break the needle. but either stitch selection "A" or "S" will give straight stitching with width at zero.
