Question about Belkin F5D8236-4 Router

1 Answer

DHCP Problems We have used this router for several years and have never had problems, but lately it has been dropping connection to the internet. We have at least 11 devices that use this router (not all at the same time) and we will randomly lose connection and on my Nook is says there's a DHCP problem and it tries to find a new IP address...any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Routers have a built in DHCP server to identify each computer connecting to it so traffic can be routed to the correct computer, if more than 1 computer/device shares the same IP you should get an IP conflict not a DHCP error. Routers also normally give out IP addresses from its pool of IP's sequentially and assigns it to expire in 24 hours, so if you reboot your router turn on 1 device grab an IP and then turn that device off, reboot your router and turn a different device on it will get the same IP, now when you turn the other device back on you have a conflict.
If your router has been reset you have to release and renew IP addresses on all your devices to prevent conflicts.

So this is normal behavior...If there is an IP conflict, why can a new IP not be reassigned? Instead in order to get a new connection, I have to reboot the router to get a new IP. Is this normal? I was going to replace the router, but not if it doesn't solve this issue. Thanks for all your help! I appreciate it.

SOURCE: need to add a computer to the DHCP client list of Belkin router

You can't add a computer to DHCP Client table manually, because DHCP client table is automatic. If you wanna know the MAC address of your computer, go to Start > Run > type CMD and press enter. On the command prompt type in IPCONFIG/ALL and look for Physical Address. That is also the MAC Address of your computer.

dchp problem. sounds like the modem is doing dhcp that's why it works plug in directly. disable the dhcp server in the router go to Network > DHCP Server > General in the router and disable it. only the modem or router can do dhcp.

Go to 192.168.1.1
Log into the router (Default username is left blank, password is admin)

Search in google about how to set up a DHCP server for your router and clone the modem's MAC address, most routers have this option, the thing is some ISPs limit the use of internet to only one machine, by cloning the modem's MAC address in your router you'll make the ISP believe there's only one machine connected to the Internet. By setting up a DHCP server in your router you'll use only one IP to connect all machines using a private network, that should solve your problems. Try both alternatives, and see which one works.
Please check the legal limitations of this procedure for your country or state and have a nice day! ;)

When using a router with your internet connection (cable, dsl modem etc.) hooked directly to the routers data port it will use the roughter's dhcp to assign ip addresses to other computer on the network. If you have your internet connection hooked directly to a computer and are using internet connect sharing then you must disable the dhcp service on the roughter because the internet connect sharing has its own dhcp and it will assign all the ip addresses. to get into the roughter's setup you open a browser (internet explorer, mozilla etc.) and type 192.168.1.1

FVS 318 Internet Problem

I have been using three FVS-318's over several years with Windows XP, Windows 2000 Clients and Servers. I experienced different problems with all three of them and some of the issues could be resolved by Netgear, others were not. One of the problems was during Terminal Server sessions, the connection would be dropped. From the inbound, everything seemed to be fine. From outbound, the router was simply not accessible. This sounds very much like your problem, only with different applications. Once I started buying total different routers, all my problems were solved. Please don't stick too long with the FVS-318, however the box looks great. Once my problems were solved, I kissed the 318 goodbye. I'm sorry my repsonse to your problem came so late. I recently discovered this website.

2wire 1800hg random no internet/random access, repair/wait fixes

It seems that you said your computer gets the ip address from your router,, which means thru DHCP of the router but if you look at the DHCP settings of your wireless card inside your computer ---the DHCP is OFF -- check your ipconfig/all command as shown in your problem too,,, your wless card does not accept the new IP which comes from your router --as DHCP is OFF on your wless card and sticks with the old ip address whereas the router maintains a new ip for your computer in its table and a mismatch occurs and you loose the internet connection ,,,,thats why repair works and then again the IP changes in the router for your computer and your computer's wless card lags behind and use the old ip adress ..... DHCP--- IS DYNAMIC , WHICH MEANS IT RENEWS THE IP address after some time and you computer gets stuck to the old one ,,, hence mismatch. "you make the DHCP -ON on your wless card too. it will be fine."

I have to repair my connection to get internet

Are you running a virus scanner or internet security software?

Is it active and has it been updated recently?

Do you perform periodic full scan of your systems and are they clean?

Do you run any apyware packages?

Are they active and have they been updated lately?

Do you perform periodic scans with them and is your system clean?

Not all virus scanners, etc catch all problems. Some catch different items.

Consider using free online services from some of the security vendors to double check your product. Several to consider

Trend Micro

Fsecure (www.fsecure.com and search for online scanner)

Symantec

Consider free spyware software for additional checks if you have not choosen to purchase a product to do this.

Lavasoft

Spybot

Clean up the issues found and see if the problems are eliminated.

Using the following instructions from the zonet website to get your IP address will also reveal your router's address in the default gateway entry (assuming your computer receives it's IP information via DHCP from the router or has been staticslly configured correctly). This will be the value you utilize instead of 192.168.1.1 to access the router's configuration.

spacer.gif Q: How can I find the IP address of my computer? spacer.gif A: Windows 95, 98, and ME:
Click on Start.
Then click on Run.
The Run Dialogue Box will appear. Type "winipcfg" in the window as shown then click OK.
The IP Configuration window will appear, displaying your Ethernet Adapter Information.
Select your adapter from the drop down menu.
If you do not see your adapter in the drop down menu, your adapter is not properly installed.
After selecting your adapter, it will display your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.
Click OK to close the IP Configuration window.

Windows 2000 and XP:
Click on Start and select Run.
Type cmd then click OK.
From the Command Prompt, enter ipconfig. It will return your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.
Type exit to close the command prompt.

Macintosh 8.x and 9.x:
Click on the Apple Menu>Control Panels>TCP/IP.
Select your Ethernet adapter from the Connect Via drop-down menu.
Under Setup, select Using DHCP Server from the Configure drop-down menu, if connecting to a router DHCP server. This is the most common setting when using a router. In this configuration, your computer will be automatically assigned an IP address by the router.
You must reboot your computer to "renew" your IP address.

Macintosh OS X:
Click on Apple Menu>System Preferences>Network>TCP/IP.

Linux:
At the command line type /sbin/ifconfig and you will get a listing of information. Your IP is shown after inet addr.
