- Maybe your kid managed to move the latch, unlikley but not impossible, so it thinks the door is closed.

It is located at the top of the door, with it fully open you will see a small opening in the center near the top. In this opening there is a white plastic latch which should appear open to accept the catch when the door is closed. If you can get a screwdriver in behind the latch it should rock forwards into the open position.
