Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

Ice Maker Issues-only crushed ice works, cubed comes out crushed

Even when I set my GE sided by side to cubed ice, it is still constantly crushing it. When I set it to crush ice, it crushes it. No matter what I do, it will not dispense cubed ice.

Also, when we have the icemaker on, ice is forming in blocks where it looks like it falls down. I don't know if I have the temperature too high or too low (have both fridge/freezer set to 5). It dosn't look like it drops individual cubes, more like a massive rock of 15-20 cubes...

I had the heating coil replaced at the bottom of the freezer about 3 months ago...other than the cubed ice and ice maker slightly malfunctioning, everything works fine.

Thanks in advance for any good advice.

Tested the dispenser as described revealing a bad solenoid. Any suggestions on part #'s or where to find?

There is a solinoid in the freezer section by the motor that turns the ice auger. Test it by selecting cubes and with the ice bucket out, open the door, hold the door switch so the lights turn out and push the dispenser button. It should make a loud snap and travel upward. If not then I would say you have a bad solinoid. If it does, then I would look at the bucket. the metal rod that runs along the side of the bucket opens a flap in the bucket that is supposed to let the full cubes drop. look for anything that might cause it to be hanging up.

Mine was doing the same thing. The solenoid that lifts the metal rod was stuck on the crush mode. I determined this by opening the door and holding the light button down with my finger. I pushed the dispenser lever on both crush and cube mode and the solenoid would not move. I manually pushed it down with my finger and it was freed up. I tested it again by doing the same thing with door open.m the solenoid would now switch. Works like new again.

I have had this same problem on my side by side GE fridge. Followed the "trouble shooting" RESCUEDRIVER1 provided and none of those were the problem on my machine...(Although I was glad I had these extra tips to check first). I found that after emptying the entire ice tray and rotating the "crusher" drive of all misc. pieces was the problem. When the ice tray makes more ice, HOLD DOWN the "cubed" key on the outside and dispense until it produces only whole cubes! (YEAH!) Hopefully this will work for you, as it did for me.. good luck!

OK. This may have only been a temporary fix, but I simply pushed down on the thingy that is in the window that is to the lower left of the ice dispensing auger which was revealed after removing the ice bucket. Now I've got cubes!!!

I never want crushed ice, so this may last.

This was done on the GE Profile PSC23SD, btw.

Read all the solutions to "fix" my GE ice-maker and nothing worked ......... until, I unscrewed the 4 screws in the ice bin (2 on either side) and saw that the long metal rod was not snapped in the center guide. I pushed it into the guide and guess what??? I now have cubes after 3 years!!!!! Whew - who knew it could be that easy! Thank you all for forcing me to check every possible solution w/o having to call a repairman.

My ice maker was only dispensing crushed ice. My spring on the rod under the ice tray was a loose from the rod that is under the ice tray, after I hooked it back to the rod my ice maker begin to dispense cube ice instead of crushed ice.

SOURCE: ice maker only crushes/does not cube

Remove the ice bin. Look at the back wall, behind where the bin was. You should see a rectangular hole, about 1.5 x 1 inches near the bottom of where the ice bin was. There should be a white plastic part inside the hole. This plastic part should be able to be lifted up with your finger, and drop down again when you release it. If is does not move, it may be frozen, or the electrical solenoid connected to it may have melted. If the part moves freely, just replace the ice bucket and try to dispense cubes again. (the metal arm sticking out the back of the ice bucket might have gotten on the wrong side of the white plastic part in back)

SOURCE: icemaker only dispenses crushed ice, not cubes

yea! I have been without cubes for 2 years. I slid out the tray, found the lever in the back where the rod went in, pulled it down, reinserted the ice tray, and IT WORKED! At first I thought I broke the lever, because I had to hold it down with a knife while I was inserting the tray, but it just must have been stuck. I am soooo happy!

SOURCE: can not get cubes from the front, just crushed ice and water?

Hi

When an ice maker is producing ice poorly--when it produces just a few cubes or none, or when the cubes are too small--it's usually because of a clogged water line or a defective water inlet valve.

First, check the water line attached to the back of the refrigerator for good water flow. To do that, first turn off the water supply valve. Then remove the water line from the back of the refrigerator. Next, place the water line into a bucket and momentarily turn the water valve back on to test the flow. If the flow is poor, you need to repair, clean, or replace the tubing or the shut-off valve that supplies the water. If the flow is good, you may have to replace the water inlet valve.

Please do rate this solution as FixYa and revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

SOURCE: Dispenses crushed ice and will not dispense ice cubes

You have a solenoid switch which switches the dispenser back and forth from crushed to cube. It could be stuck or not working or the parts connecting it could be disconnected or broken. You will have to observe to see if any parts are moving and if any noise is coming from the solenoid

Remove the dispenser cover by gently prying starting at the bottom going round and round a little at a time to prevent from breaking it. When it's off the screws will be exposed to access the other components

Ice maker crushes even when it is in the cube

If you pull out your ice bucket and look on the bottom you will see a long brass colored rod. Now, if you look inside your freezer section. you will see the slot the rod enters each and every time you insert your ice maker bucket. In the down position (normal) it produces crushed ice, When you switch the lever in the front for ice cubes, there is a plunger that lifts the rod and produces the combination that only allows ice cubes to come out. I would first check the plunger behind the panel and see if it is free.If it is not free it can cause the ice to be crushed...

chek these sites

There is an opening next to the auger that dispenses the ice. In there there is a lever that must move up and down. It actually seats the metal rod on the bottom of the ice maker and controls cube or crushed. Make sure the lever is down (cube position) when you return the basket to the freezer. I had to hold it down while I slid the rod into the opening. Cubes again. http://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/showthread.php?t=783

Ice maker only dispenses crushed ice, won't dispense cubed ice anymore.

I have a GE TFX25ppbaaa refrigerator. The ice maker corkscrew motor would run and provide crushed ice only. The corkscrew motor would not run when the switch was moved to the cubed ice ( half moon) setting.

I replaced the large Light/ water/ crushed ice/cubed ice switch , ( product service number GEH WR55X129 ) ( part number GE 162D6372 PO17 )and it fixed the problem. Cost was about $43.00.
