These symptoms are usually an indication of a corrupt Operating system or a failed harddrive. take your computer to a shop to find out which. If you have the Windows disc you can try and fix it yourself by entering the repair system or Press "F8" when the computer starts and select "repair system".

SOURCE: emachine t3604, computer shut down. then restarted

Hello,
I'm sorry to say this but your hard drive may be faulty and need a replacement. Your files might still be retrievable but you will need to take it to a repair center to get it retrieved or plug it as an external hard drive and try to retrieve data yourself. But nevertheless, it seems like your hard drive gave in and will need to be replaced with a new one..

Thanks,
Lolita

SOURCE: NTLDR is missing. Press ctl+alt+del to restart.

I assume you are using Windows XP. This is what you do:

Windows XP users

  1. Get a Windows Installation CD. It doesn't have to be yours, anyone will do.
  2. Insert the Windows XP CD into the computer.
  3. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
  4. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to lauch the Recovery Console to repair Windows.
  5. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
  6. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password. If you have none set, just press Enter without typing anything.
  7. Copy the below two files to the C:\ directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example, the files from the CD-ROM drive (which in this case is "D:\" are copied to the C:\ drive. This letter may be different on your computer.

    copy D:\i386\ntldr C:\ (hit Enter)
    copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\ (hit Enter)

  8. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.
If you have any more questions or this is not clear to you, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

SOURCE: a disk read error occurred press ctl-alt-del to restart goes back 2 same scrn

Sounds like the hard drive has errors.
Boot to a windows XP cd.
Repair using the windows console.
at the repair console type:

chkdsk /R (hit enter)

Let that run, it takes a long time.
If it's able to repair the drive enough for operation it will.

If it cannot you will be forced to replace the hard drive.

What is the f2,f8, r f12 want work? only the Ctrl+ Alt+ del that wroks

F2 usually takes you to the BIOS setup screen, you need to hit the keys as soon as you power up.

F12 selects on a Dell instant boot menu to select booting from CD-ROM, USB, etc rather than the BIOS options.

F8 goes to safe mode start up for windows, this must be done before the windows logo comes up (ie when it is a black screen).

Control - Alt -Delete Keys together can be used any time, after windows boots as it tells it to re-boot the computer, back to start up.

How do I get my computer restarted from a black screen when ctrl+alt+del does not work

Hold down the Ctl + Alt+Del keys together for about 15 seconds, this should put the system into a state that allows you to disconnect the power for about 3 minutes.
Plug the power back in and re-boot in "Safe Mode", this will flag up any errors and more than likely repair the system files as it starts up.
If still nothing listen for error codes when it is powered up, this will give a rough indication as to what is faulty, VGA, RAM, Sound card etc.
Was anything being changed or unplugged/plugged in just before it went wrong?

Hope this helps.

On the right hand side of montior the is a screen

There might be a tool on your computer about that, you can check the utilities programs on your computer by searching in the Program groups of your Start menu and disable it. Your manual may give you some idea how to disable it. If you right click on that pop up window you might see an option to stop it from popping up. If those are not working, press CTL+ALT+DEL and select the task manager, then kill the process with a similar name. But you don't want to kill too much otherwise other applications may be affected too. Hope that helps.

Laptop will not start,

looks as though your hard drive is u/s Try and see if it is visible in the bios pages, if not replace it. Bios being, when you switch on you press f2, or ctl-alt.del or just del key. This puts you into the BIOS which tells the computer what it can and cannot do. The 1st page should have your hard drive listed, if not then replace it.

1. Put the Windows installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer. 2. Press a key when you are prompted. 3. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next. 4. Click Repair your computer. 5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next. 6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt. 7. Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd , and then press ENTER. • If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it presents you with an installation path of a Windows directory. A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully. • If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command. Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old Bootrec /rebuildbcd 8. An disk error occurred ctl alt & del to restart

You should be more specific as to when the problem occured as the solution for each instance would be different. However since there is no other information, please proceed with the following generic solution.
if there is a disk error you should either press ESC (to remove the alert window on the screen) or hit CTRL + ALT +DEL.
within windows you will get the option to start Task Manager. Choose Task Manager. Locate Windows Explorer in the list of processes, select it and press End Process.
All your windows along with desktop and system tray will disappear.
Then within task manager Goto File > New Task.
A Run command window will open. type in explorer.exe and press enter. Your windows along with desktop apps will restart and this time there wont be an i/o error.
