Cisco 7940 upgrade issues!

Hello! I have searched far and wide and cannot find a solution to my phone issue! Firstly, I brought the phone off ebay with the intention to use it with Sipgate (I understand I need SIP firmware to do that). When the phone arrived I plugged it in and connected it to my router hoping (probably quite naively!) that it would just work...this obviously wasn't the case. When the phone booted up the following showed: Configuing VLAN Configuing IP (for around .5 seconds) Protocol Application Invalid (O/A in the corner) It is now stuck on Protocol Invalid... I have done the hold # 123 etc. factory reset but am unsure a/ which firmware it had originally b/ which firmware it now has being reset I have installed tftp32d as a tftp server and have tried multiple firmware upgrades (SIP versions 2.0 through to 7.1 in hope the phone would pick at least 1 up!) and nothing happens, still the same scenario! I am really at a loss at what to do, no forums or Cisco documentation has helped...I am a relative novice! Please help me!

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

SOURCE: Cisco 7960G IP Phone Problem

Try to manually reset the phone - **#"Settings" (this will unlock the configuration) + Network + menu under number "33" - erase the configuration. Then the phone configuration will be erased. Also you can manually set IP address and TFTP server

SOURCE: Converting Cisco 7940 IP Phone to SIP

Unlocking a Cisco 7940

Method 1:
1) Unplug the phone
2) Plug the phone back in while holding the # key
The phone will soon display “Reset key sequence detected”
3) After several lights flash press the following keys in order:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 * 0 #
4) The phone will then ask you if you want to save the network configurations:
Save network cfg? 1=yes 2=no
5) The phone will soon display “Factory reset initiated” and will continue
through the boot up process.
If that process fails to work for some reason there
is a second method.

Method 2

Complete these steps:

  1. Press Settings.
  2. The Network Configuration lock symbol must be unlocked. If not, exit to the main window and press ** # again.
  3. Press 3 on the keypad (or scroll down) for Network Configuration.
  4. Press 33 on the keypad (or scroll down) to Erase Configuration.
  5. Press the Yes softkey.
  6. Press the Save softkey.
The phone will now be reset.

You are very close to fixing your problem. You will need the correct firmware and files; these are proprietary but you should be able to acquire them from your certified reseller. Alternatively, here at IdacomUSA, we have the proper firmware on hand, and can flash the phone for you to get it back to life. Call us at 1-800-903-9190 or visit us at http://idacomusa.com

Here are the instructions for configuring these units for 3cx

Since the 3cx softphone worked well, I don't see why you couldn't configure each as for 3cx and make them work as well.

'in call' volume cisco 7940

The handsets will eventually go bad. If it is every single handset that you have, the problem is with the system. But if the problem is only with a few of your phones, you might consider replacing the handsets. We at IdacomUSA.com have replacement Cisco handsets for sale at only $25. Hope this helps you out :)

Try adding Cisco 7914 (time two) for additional (other) phone lines, or define caller group so phone call rings around.

Netgear fs726tp and cisco phones

that the 7940 and 60
phones from Cisco do not support the IEEE 802.3af Power Over Ethernet
standard
they would work if you
simply reversed the polarity of 2 of the pairs of wire. i.e
by swapping 4 with 7, and 5 with 8 you could use a standard
POE injector to power the phone.
if you have a crimp tool and some cable laying around, you can give it
a whirl and it works. If you aren't familiar with making cable,
don't try this
Basically, you just wire one side of the cable as standard 568b
and then reverse 4 and 7, and 5 and 8 on the other side. Then,
simply plug your Cisco into a standard POE injector and Your phone works.
