SOURCE: HK AVR-247 protect mode

This is an indication of an internal problem. Typically this is shorted output transistors. Expect a parts cost in the $25-$40 range for this repair.

SOURCE: I've just bought HK AVR

This is clearly a manufacture defect right off the assembly line. From your description you have a serious intermittent problem with the AVR unit when it comes to selection and other choices and it will only get worse, I strongly suggest you return the item in favor of another.

SOURCE: My Harmon Kardon 3490 goes

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'nekkid'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Why Harman Kardo HK 3490 goes into DSP voltage protect mode

This amplifier can go into protection if one of the low ohm resistors on the power module that is soldered to the transformer is defect. Check out R951 and R952, they are both 0R47 (0,47ohm). They are often broken and measure some kilo ohms.

You have a problem with your DSP circuit. Unless you are good at reading schematics and using DVM's and soldering, then you need to take it to a servicer.

I believe that these receivers needs approx. 100 Electrolytic capacitors that will fix all these kinds of problems. Mine had to go in the shop recently, the tech working on it is normally quite thourough, however he troubleshot to some ribbon flat cables that were defective and their slotted push in connectors going from the DSP board to the front processor. HK once pointed that a bunch of electrolytic capacitors have dried up, hence would need to be replaced. I would have done the work myself, however the unit had an extended warranty, in this case I will get an exchanged unit, perhaps a unit of my choice, but I still want a Harman Kardon. The DSP processor is not always found to be faulty, however there is a change in the processor being used depending on your particular receiver's serial number.
good luck.

Harman kardon avr-147

Hi Javis. This is perfectly normal ! This mode change is done because the receiver auto detects the digital audio signal and sets the receiver's DSP to decode the signal correctly. You can go into the OSD menu to bypass the auto detection of it, but it's not recommended at all ! You're getting the best audio quality by doing so. Thanks ! cheebster.
