Computer will not go into STBY or Hibernate when lid is closed

Gateway 200ARC. Changed screen & motherboard, kept orig hard drive. Display pwr options/advanced/ pwr options box is checked for "when I close the lid of my portable computer it go into STBY." What is the trigger for lid close sensing? or Is my problem a software driver problem?

where is the switch under the screen to base? Do you know how it works? I do not see any mechanical switch like on other laptops.

  • terryh5 Jan 28, 2009

Thanks for trying, but there is no such device on the Gateway 200ARC. It has to be a prox sensing device because there is no mechanical switch. The latch also doesn't have any other function other than to hold the cover closed. I have had the whole computer apart and can't find what triggers the close signal. I'm baffled!

If the option is checked, and it doesn't work, the switch under the screen to base closing needs to be adjusted/replaced. i would double check settings and intallation disk if this does not work.

the little switch if a piece if plastic protruding near the hinge of the monitor, that hits a little button/switch in a cutout on the base/ keyboard.

my acer and many others have them in various places.

  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. After the Gateway BIOS logo appears, repeatedly press the F8 key. The Advanced Boot Options menu opens. If it doesn't the motherboard is most likely bad).
  3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (advanced), and then press the ENTER key.
If that does not work, turn PC off, Do this again, but this time choose 'repair your computer' at the top.
If it still does not work, either your hard drive went bad or Windows is corrupt. Either way Windows must be re-installed.

Startup screen wont show on external display

restart your computer repeatedly tapping the f8 key to enter safe mode while the screen is black once in safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you to attempt to repair your computer

Windows Advanced Options Menu

Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice

you could select the safe mode option and see if you can get the extended desktop again but first you will have to find out why it crashed

if you select last known good configuration that worked it might give you an idea

hope it helps

No operating system found, gateway 200arc

Presuming its not the worst (your hard disk has failed) quite often this is the simplest of things...like you have left a USB stick in...these are often bootable and so the computer tries to boot from them fist, and then doesnt bother trying your propper hard disk next..hence fail.
also check if you mahine has a floppy disk drive there is none in it.
other than that.
check that your bios recognises it.
by which I mean usualy on startup it offers you an option to go into setup.
[f1] or sometime [del] or whatever.
go into there ensure that your HDD is recognised by the system and check its listed in boot order also (only change these if its not one of the simpler problems above)

Dell Inspiron 1300 - When I re-open the lid,Screen stays Black !

Your laptop either goes to hibernate or sleep mode when you close the lid. Then, when you open the lid up, the screen is still off because your pc already hanged/froze and could not wake up at all (usual problem in vista). Off course, hard shutdown would fix it. But actual fix is under power options on your control panel. Check your current scheme and edit it. There are options there that you can select to "do nothing when closing the lid"

Hope this helps

Gateway 200ARC goes to "Last Known Good Configuration" screen

try reseating the dvd drive and then go into the BIOS to be sure that the drive is being recognized. Actually go into the area of the BIOS that shows the name of the dvd drive that it recognizes.

It it does recognize the dvd drive properly then try other boot cd's. It still may not recognize them.

If so try another known good dvd drive in the laptop and if you have the same problem then take out the hard drive and then see if the system will boot up off of the dvd drive then. If it still doesn't boot then the motherboard is bad.

If it does boot then that means the new hard drive is bad and shorting out the dvd drive controller on the motherboard and the hard drive would need to be replaced.

Hope this helps clear up things for you and sorry for not responding sooner.

Gateway 200arc motherboard problem

If there are two wires running from the power button on your case to the motherboard, take them off and try jumpering those two terminals with a jumper or something that will make contact for just a second and them take back off. Your power button may have fried along with the power supply.

Closing my laptop's lid crashes the system

Check what video card you have.
  • Go to start. Right click My computer. Click properties>hardware>device manager. Click the plus next to 'Display Adapters'.

Check the video card listed under Display adapters.
  • If you see Intel. Click this.
  • If you see Nvidia. Click this.
Just follow the wizard and restart afterwards.
Try to close the lid again and see if it got fixed.

Open/Closing

CONTROL PANEL --> POWER OPTIONS --> ADVANCED TAB

Select "When I close my lid (or something to that effect)" and change it to "do nothing" or "ask what to do". There is nothing I hate more than a misbehaving hibernation mode!
