Part of screen cut off

I have a Sony Rear Projection Television, had for a couple years then all of a sudden a part of the screen went missing. Its just line about 3 inches wide at very left side of the screen. I thought it might be the picture tube I don't know. Im just wondering if its a problem I could fix or do I need professionals

My 12 year old Sony KP-53V80 TV suddenly turned off and will not show a picture just a small rainbow at the top of the screen, then a whistling sound, crack and turns back off. can you help?

sounds like the inverter went bad...There's a high voltage device in there that runs the whole "picture" thing. There are capacitors involved with it that have probably failed leading to this mess.. That would be what that "crack" is...If you try to turn it back on does it just "click " and then stay off?
