Changing tips on a weller wd1 wp80 soldering iron

Cannot figure out how to do this. In our attempts to remove the old tip, it has broken off about 1/4" inside the barrel. There seems to be no obvious way to remove the old tip. The new tip, however, appears to have a snap ring groove near the base.

Hi, I'm not sure the tip is defective. Check that the tip is screwed in tight. If it is not good and tight the tip will not get a good heat transfer from the solder wand. Hope this helps. If the wand will heat then the tip should.

SOURCE: i have a weller wp35,

The WP35 is strong enough and the ST3 tip will do the job. The larger tips are really only for covering larger items but when soldering it's the wire you heat, rather than the solder, and melt the solder with the wire. The tip will reach the same temperature regardless of the size and while the larger tip might heat the wire a little faster the difference would not even be noticeable.

Do stained glass soldering tips go bad or stop working. I have a weller soldering iron that doesn't heat up hot enough to solder. is it the tip or the iron

If this is the dual trigger Weller gun and your tips are held in place by either set screws or by locking nuts, Just loosen both of the parts that are holding the tip to the gun and then retighten them back up. Soldering iron tips that appear to be tight might not be and this will insure that the tip is indeed tight and also cleans up the connection of the tip to the soldering iron. Oxidation from heating and cooling will cause a tip to not get very hot. Loosen the tip holder and then retighten it. Hope this gets you going again.

You might want to check the iron itself with an induction power tester to see if it is getting any power to the tip. This type of tester doesn't require any dis-assembly just close proximity to energized circuits.

Weller wd1XXX with WP80 not heating with - - - error on display HELP?

There is ceramic heating element that gives problems, and there is some kind of transformer or coil below that. I had no success in repairing the iron so I ended up replacing it. My soldering station saw two iron replacements over the years, I checked to make the station was putting out the 24volts required.

Weller WD1. At power on screen says "OFF". The 3 preset temperatures are still displayed. Tested with a working lead and soldering tip, OK.

Just press UP/DOWN at the same time quickly. If you hold them down you will get to the menu but just pressing them and releasing them will turn the station back on.
