Dell Latitude 60 Laptop Won't Load windows

I messed up the settings while trying to install a network and I get to the log on screen and it says I do not have the proper pw. I would like to get to the DOS command prompt and format the HD and start over. How do I do that?

I got to the command prompt that way, but apparently DOS is not on this laptop? Format c: didn't work.

You can either press F8 repeatedly at boot or the Delete key for setup to change the boot drive to cd with the Windows cd. F12 will get you a one time boot option as well. Steve

By starting over again do you mean reload Windows? Once you boot to the Windows installation cd it automatically gives you the option to delete the partition, repair and install a fresh copy. The latter option will give you the option of formatting as well. Steve

Wlan card disabled

The Dell Latitude E6400 laptop comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor for fast computing and an NVIDIA graphics card for video playback, gaming and Web browsing. The laptop has a built in Wi-Fi card, letting you connect to the Internet on-the-go. However, if you're unfamiliar with Dell or the laptop's factory installed Windows Vista operating system, you might not know how to enable to Wi-Fi.

Slide the switch on the side of the laptop toward the front of the laptop. This switch enables Wi-Fi connectivity on the Dell Latitude E6400. When switched into the back position, the Wi-Fi is turned off. Turn on your Dell Latitude E6400 laptop and log into Windows Vista. Click on the Windows "Start" button. Click on "Wireless," located in the Start menu's "Show" list. A list of currently broadcasting wireless networks appears on screen. With your Wi-Fi enabled, you can connect to any of these available networks. Secured networks ask you for a password when you click "Connect," while unsecured networks connect automatically.

Windows files are corupt or the hard drive has issues, try and reload operational system if disc is available, have the hardware checked if unable to load.

Dell latitude e4200 restarts with blue screen

Sounds like the image doesn't have the right drive controller driver included. Could be because the image was created on a different laptop or could be the drive controller is configured differently. You can confirm this from the STOP error code on the blue screen

Go into the BIOS setup (probably F2 at boot) and see if the controller mode is set to AHCI. If so, set it to compatibility or combined(?) and try again.

Either way, if you've installed an image for the wrong hardware, you probably should do a remedial install. Boot from your Windows XP disc and follow the prompts as if you were doing a clean install until you get to the license agreement. At the next screen, it should show you any existing Windows installs and give you a new option to repair. Let this go - it won't touch any user files, just replace all the Windows files with those from the CD. Have your system drivers and service packs handy to tidy up when it's done.

My dell laptop latitude d600 problem is when i turn it on it starts and it will shut downe.

Sometimes this can be a problem with a driver in Windows (if it is getting to the Windows part of boot up) In cases where it does try to load windows, I have seen this happen a lot with video drivers.

Try this:

Boot the Computer into safe mode....when you see the dell screen flash..start tapping the key until you get a menu. Choose safe mode and see if you can get logged in that way (the screen will look different in safe mode, it loads with a low resolution and low colors - also called vga mode)

If you get into the computer in safe mode, right click your my computer icon and click "manage" from there find the device manager, find your video adapter in the list and right click and choose uninstall. Once you have uninstalled the driver, you can try to reboot normally from there. If it works, it should automatically reinstall the driver when you get into the machine regularly.

You can try repeating this process for other drivers too, but be careful....I would maybe only try with Video, sound, or network drivers...They are most likely to be the problem culprits anyway.

If safe mode doesn't even work you may have a more major issue, like a hardware problem or a corrupted Windows installation.

For a Windows install corruption you can try to rebuild or repair your Windows installation by booting the machine from your Windows install disk (Or perhaps your Dell System Restore disk) ...Keep in mind this will wipe out your data, so have a back up.

I posted an answer to a rebuild question here:
http://www.fixya.com/support/t8598270-need

It has more detail on how to do a rebuild. But be careful, you don't want to lose data.

If the other laptop can't see the network, then it sounds like you somehow turned off SSID broadcasting while you were in the router's settings. Log back into your router and look for the SSID broadcast enable setting. Make sure it is set to on, then save the changes and reset the router if you have to. The laptop should be able to see it now. (There is also a setting in the Windows wireless network properties that you can check to connect to a network even if it is not broadcasting, as long as you have connected to it previously.)

Hope that helps!

Won't load Desktop

Is this running XP? Does the computer shut down or just go back to the welcome screen and ask for your password again?

If it returns to the welcome screen (and it is XP) get the following two files from another xp machine and copy them to the windows\system32 folder.

userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Restart the computer and log back in.

Hope this helps
