Finder relaunch itself like every minute

Mac OS X Tiger It looks like Finder relaunch itself every minute or so. Then all open applications are not active (but they do not shut) and I have to click on open application to be able to work. It is as if Finder has hiccups.

A finder crash -- periodic blink of the desktop and then a rebuild of the icons and maybe an open window comes back up -- is often due to incompatible add-ons... programs that used to work with an older version of the system or finder, but now don't.  We've seen this happen with the likes of 'magicmenu', stuffit avr, and other apps.  You can test this by going into your system preferences to the login items and removing all login items,, then reboot your computer.  Does the periodic flash of the desktop (or Finder windows) stop?  Then something you deactivated was conflicting with the Finder.
And you can't rule out a corrupt Finder preference file (look for, toss it, and reboot).

Sounds like you have a permissions issue, first boot in single-user mode and repair permissions.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

If that doesn't help, try booting into Safe Mode and see what happens, if it comes up hopefully another restart may solve, if not, you can at least use this as a starting point to try and resolve. Safe Mode will allow you to get around, surf, etc...

If Safe Mode comes up alright, I would install AppleJack, excellent troubleshooting article can be found here... Troubleshooting Tools: AppleJack

Another excellent free tool for performing maintenance is Onyx (be sure to download the right version for your system). Install the package, then run it, it will check your drive and the structure, after this, click on the automation tab and check on everything for Maintenance, Clear Cache, Cleaning, and check on Reset -> LaunchServices database and Mail's Envelope Index. When it completes, restart. Repeat any time something seems flaky, if not try to run at least once a month.

I do not know if this will work for everyone, but it worked for me.

It seems all to be linked to Stuffit and a preference called Stuffit AVR (Archive Via Rename): In your system preferences go to the bottom and click on the Stuffit AVR option. Click the Stuffit AVR tab  on the left, and click the "STOP" button. This should do the trick. For some reason this is cycling through our desktop/finder and causing so much of the frustration since this update.

Can't Relaunch Microsoft Outlook 11

Go to your User home (in Finder, make sure the sidebar is shown. Click on the icon with your user name). You should see a list of folders at the left - Applications, Desktop, Documents, ... Click on Library and open the Preferences subfolder. Scroll down the list of files until you get to "" or similar filename. Delete this file, then try opening Outlook 11. You will have to redo your user settings if it works. You may also have to re-enter your product key, but it's more likely Microsoft hides this somewhere else. If you just end up with more problems, drag the file back to where it was from the Trash.
Explanation: although it's rare in OS X, preference files can be corrupted. For example, a power glitch while the hard drive is writing may cause garbage to be written across a file other than the one intended for modification. A corrupted initialization preference can stall or abort the application launch. Trashing (or at least removing from the Preferences folder) the bad file will force the application to make a new one from scratch.

ITunes Error 13010 - How to correct this error in iTunes

As with any application in any operating system in this high tech computer industry today, there is always going to an error of some kind. How that error can be eliminated, is always the principal concern of any computer user of a Mac or PC.

One of the errors I would like to provide a tip for you, on how to resolve, is the "Error 13010" error message, which affects users of iTunes in Mac OS X.

The Error 13010 alert, will usually appear when a user is unable to launch and open iTunes. More often than not, however, the fix for this error is a relatively easy one.

Here are steps for you can implement to eliminate this error:

For Mac OS X

• Make sure iTunes application is closed.

• Click anywhere on the blank space of your desktop and Finder will appear near the Apple menu icon located in the upper left corner of your screen.

• From the Finder menu click on Go> then select Go to Folder


• You will need to type /Users/td7/Music/iTunes in the open dialog


• This will take you directly to your iTunes folder.

• Within iTunes folder, locate and remove to the Trash,
the iTunes Library Genius.itdb. file


Once you have removed this file, close the Finder window and relaunch

Launching iTunes will restore a new iTunes Library Genius.itdb file
and as a result, no longer see the Error 13010 alert message.
In the event that this procedure does not allow you to launch iTunes normally, you should remove iTunes and re-install the application.

But don't worry though, you will not lose your iTunes Library, as that remains untouched in the Music folder.

You are simply going into your Applications folder and removing iTunes application and then reinstalling it.

So now you have at least one workaround, from a number of iTunes errors, should it manifest, which you can use to resume normal functionality of your iTunes application.

The application finder can't be opened

There are several different ways to access your applications. You have a folder on the shortcut bar at the bottom of your screen; If you click on the folder you can select the app, or you can scroll to the botton and click on the arrow that says "open in finder". Or you have Finder at the bottom of the screen; Open finder, then select applications. Depending on your OS, you may have launch pad: It's located next to finder on the shortcut bar. You can open that and scroll thru all your apps. Hope this is what you were looking for.

Hard drive disappeared from my desktop

This should help.

Launch ScriptEditor and copy and paste this into the script window:

tell application "System Events"

set visible of disk "NameofDisk" to true

end tell

tell application "Finder" to quit

delay 1

tell application "Finder" to launch

Replace NameofDisk with the actual name of your disk, hit the Compile icon to make sure the script didn't acquire any errors, and then hit run. This should set the visible attribute back to visible and quit and relaunch the Finder, thus making the change available.

The same thing can happen to other drives, both internal and external. You can use the same Applescript to fix those as well, just put in the name of the drive.

I am looking for a 10.4 Tiger upgrade for my Apple G4 laptop

Go to the finder at the top left, and click on Software Update... follow the instructions and it should download and update.
If you do not own a previous version of Tiger, then you need to buy it first.

Try this:

• Open a new Finder window and select Library from your Home Folder
• Select the Preferences folder.
• Locate and remove to the Trash,
• Now click on the back arrow in the upper left corner of your
window- this will take you back to the Library window.
• Now locate and remove the folder entitled "Caches"

-Close all windows and then click on the blue Apple menu icon and select from the drop down menu, Logout<username>.

• this will take you to the main login window. Simply log back in and before you attempt to launch System Preferences, run Disk Utility first:

font.f1 {font: 13.0px Myriad Pro} -RUN DISK UTILITY FIRST-

Go to Finder Menu bar
• Click Go > Utilities > Disk Utility and open up Disk Utility app.
• Click on Macintosh HD volume (or on the name you have changed
this volume to.)
• Select "Repair Disk Permissions"
**Let Disk Utilities run this repair permissions until completion
(This is not often a necessary step, but in the many of the hands-on software and Mac OS X troubleshooting I have done on Macs, I almost always run it just because it does repair alot of the permissions on files which can sometimes affect how certain applications, files and folders work. It also improves your Mac's performance a bit too:)

Once Disk Utility is complete and there are no errors in red in the completion summary (if there are errors listed in red, re-run DU to see if those error will clear- if they don't reply back to this post right away and let me know what the exact error message is), quit Disk Utility.

• Relaunch System Preferences.

My Vectorworks 2009 application keeps crashing everytime I try opening. This is the message I receive: "The application Vecotworks 2009 quit unexpectedly. Mac Os X and other applications are not affected....

first try to uninstall that from control panel and reinstall again and check whether it is liscenced. okay
if it not work then it has affected your registry then either upgrade your operating system or format your hard disk. and install this application again. it will work properly. okay

Same thing except...

Option 1 back up all essential files set up a new user account and transfer files back. If you have a .mac/me account you can sync all adressbook/bookmarks etc...
Option 2 Best option back up all essential files and settings. Perform clean install from original OSX Disk and reinstall all applications. Remember to repair permissions and run software update.

Are you running OSX 10.4? Not supported yet...
