This problem with the PS3 is usually associated with the Bluray drive or more specifically the optical laser on the drive which is failing to read the disk. Sony charge $150 for this repair if the console is outside warranty.
You could try cleaning the lens on the laser as this can work sometimes but this requires you to open the console and most often the lens is faulty and needs to be changed. For more information on the lens and how to access it either to change it or clean it please see this FixYa Tip.
i had same problem. ps3 was reading and then not reading discs off and on. finally it totally went out and would no longer read any type of disc. it would still play demos and get on web etc but wouldn't read any type of disc. u need to call sony's 1 800 # and they will repair it for free if u have a proof of purchase under a year if no i heard they charge around 150. if u purchased it from a gamestop and u don't have ur receipt u can call them and have them fax it to sony cause they take ur info when u buy one from there
