Re: Text to speech voice breaks up when giving directions
Reloading the software will NOT help. Garmin have a patch to fix this (it's a common problem). The same thing happened to mine and I took it to Garmin for repair. They fixed the unit for me while I waited! The technician said that it needs to be repaired by them.

On the Nuvi 7xx series as well as many other nuvi models, voice updates are free and downloadable from garmin.com. Garmin only charges for map upgrades. Maps do not contain voices. I have backups of french text to speech (TTS) voices. I would be happy to give you links to download them to you.
The "vocal directions" are a function of the Text-To-Speech, or TTS. When you are picking a voice for your unit, you will usually find 2 listings for each voice, and one of them will be designated TTS. Choose that one and your voice should give you spoken directions and street names.
Press the wrench/tools button at the main menu. Select the icon with the lips (language). You should see (2) buttons labeled American English. The first one makes all of the text on the Nuvi in the English alphabet. The second button is for the voice. If it just says "American English", then it will only say "Left" or "Right". Press this button and select a TTS voice (Text to Speech), like Jill, Jack, Daniel.....etc.
Question: How do I change the Voice Language setting on my nuvi 2xx?
All of the Garmin® automotive GPS units that speak street names are also loaded with basic voice prompts (example: Turn Right in 500 feet) as well as Text-to-Speech (TTS) voices that speak street names. If one of the basic types of voice prompts has been selected, the voice prompts will not speak street names.
In order to change this setting on the nüvi® 2xx series, follow these steps:
In the Main Menu, touch Tools (Wrench icon).
Press the Down arrow in the bottom right corner.
The first line on this screen is the Voice language. Touch the Current Voice option for the GPS device listed to change the Voice.
Select a Voice that is labeled TTS. These will speak street names. Options without the TTS label will say the distance until the next turn, but will not include the street name.
