How to set the vat rate

The North American equivalent to Value Added Tax (VAT) would be Provincial Sales Tax (PST), Goods and Services Tax (GST), or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in Canada. In the US, it would be state sales tax, as there is no national sales tax, yet;)

What calculator is it for?

Good luck,

Paul

I need a formula to calculate sales tax. the tax caps at $300 dollars.

=IF((A1*7.5%) > 300, 300, A1*7.5%)
  • IF Sales Amount * Tax Rate is greate than $300 then make it $300 no matter what the value is.
  • IF Sales Amount * Tax Rate is less than $300 then make it the value of Sales Amount * Tax Rate.

Do I File A Sales Tax Return For Any Period By Which I Had No Sales?

talk with an accountant on this but generally you have to file a tax return regardless of sales or incomes or what ever
you have to have the tax law read to you in this case.

My total sale is $101.65. I collected 6.25% sales tax. What is the formula to find out the portion of the total is the sales tax total?

Partly this is a matter of interpretation. If $101.65 is seen as 100% then sales tax is
$101.65 x 6.25 / 100 = $6.35

However there is a flaw in this. The remainder (the sale price) is
$101.65 - $6.35 = $95.30

So what was the sales tax on this remainder?
6.35 / 95.30 x 100 = 6.67%........too much

So we should regard the $ total as 106.25% not 100%. Then the amount which was sales tax is really
$101.65 x 6.25 / 106.25 = $5.98

Posting progress payments

If you are paying your sales tax by invoice date - the payments will not affect your liablity. ie you owe the whole amount of sales tax as of the date of the invoice. If you are paying sales tax as of the time of payment. You will owe sales tax at the time you receive payment.
Since you are using progress invoicing, the sales tax would be come due at the time of the invoice. If you are just receiving payments, you would receive payments (as you would with any customer, and not invoice until time of completion. You would just need to make sure that your preference for sales tax due date is set to Invoice date, not time of payment.
